Sex. Games. Sex in games! Given how the video game industry has relished opportunities to embrace gore, horror, and violence in for many years, it’s surprising how poor we are at depicting that other argh-no-don’t-make-me-watch-this-with-my-parents-in-the-room taboo: sex. Despite elbowing for room at the ‘games are art’ debate, many titles fail to portray sex in an authentic or meaningful manner. Whether it’s the stiff (pardon the pun) animations, cringeworthy dialogue, the curious application of quick-time prompts, or a genital-mashing combination of all three, games rarely seem to get coitus right. So, in the ruthless pursuit of investigative journalism, we’ve trawled through the very best – and the very best worst – sex scenes in video game history. For science, of course. Needless to say, you probably shouldn’t be reading this in work, near your parents, or anyone you’re trying to sleep with in real life. Naturally, … [Read more...] about Sex games: The best – and best worst – sex scenes in video game history

We’re having a conversation about violence in video games because politicians want a distraction, not because there’s any causal link between games and real-world shooting. But that contextual link between the two topics is enough to make some of us feel like we need to tread lightly with our support for the more cathartic scenes in our games. To hell with that. I’m not willing to be put in a rhetorical box by people who think a piece of entertainment is more lethal than a firearm. Because I love violent video games. I love many games that go for the shock value or even humorous violence. I also love horror movies and metal. You can take a bunch of violent scenes from a variety of games and present them out of context to make a point, but that point is going to be empty. Every art form can be turned into a numbing warning about its own worst impulses with the proper editing and lack of context. “This is violent, isn’t it?” Trump was reported to … [Read more...] about I love violent video games
So the big White House summit on video game violence is today (the White House finally let the industry officials know they were coming to it), but unfortunately, there's no one there that's really qualified to speak on the subject in any authoritative manner. Ironically, even though the current administration has said some studies show a correlation between violent video games and increased violent tendencies in those who play them, they couldn't be bothered even to invite a psychologist that designed or conducted any of those studies. The invitees to the meeting on video game violence at the White House are perplexing. One one hand you have Strauss Zelnick of Take-Two, Pat Vance of the ESRB, Mike Gallagher of the ESA, and Robert Altman of ZeniMax Media. Those all seem like good choices if you want to speak with a group that knows the industry and how rating classifications are assigned to games. Also, President Trump's brother Robert is on the board of Zenimax, which probably … [Read more...] about No One at the White House Meeting on Video Game Violence is Qualified to Say They Cause Violence
The problem with Twitter, people always say, is that it’s too good. Everything on Twitter is just too wonderful. If only someone could somehow make Twitter horrifying enough that you instinctually threw your phone across the room upon loading the app, we could get our lives back. Friends, consider this problem solved. Game designer Liz England has created @vg_erotica, a Twitter bot which combines romance novel excerpts with video game references, and every time it tweets I hear myself cry “Oh no!” aloud. It is beautiful in its dreadfulness. Workplace warning: this post contains awful sexiness. The bot combines snippets of Sarah MacLean novels with video game memes and references, turning sexy into dank. My skin crawls yet I laugh. If you want to see how such a monster came into being, check out England’s Twitter thread of progress. I think the worst part is, I have a nagging half-memory that I might once have said something somewhat like this to an actual living … [Read more...] about This perfectly horrifying Twitter bot combines erotica and video games
Hello all, I stumbled upon an interesting article from a reputable website where they discuss if anything has dethroned E.T. from being the worst game of all time for the last 35 years. https://thenextweb.com/syndication/2018/01/05/worst-video-games-last-35-years/ I dunno guys, kind of looks like he hit all the usual suspects. What do you think? … [Read more...] about Is E.T. the worst video game of all time?
