Audio player loading… Twitch (opens in new tab) saw a resurgence of hate raids over the weekend, as "bad actors" spammed the channels of women and LGBTQ+ streamers with hateful and homophobic chat messages. The raids are reportedly originating from Cozy.tv, a streaming platform founded in 2021 by white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Hate raids, in which a streamer's channel is flooded with abusive text, had been a long-standing problem on Twitch when it came to widespread light (opens in new tab) last year. The depth of the problem was exposed by the success of the #ADayOffTwitch protest last September, which made a significant cut into viewership (opens in new tab) . Shortly after that, Twitch began taking steps to address the situation, including the addition of new account verification options (opens in new tab) and even legal action (opens in new tab) against the worst offenders. In response to the new wave of hate raids, Twitch said that it is suspending … [Read more...] about More hate raids strike Twitch as white supremacist takes credit

The biggest bitcoin miners lost over $1 billion during this year’s crypto crash
Audio player loading… The largest trio of publicly traded bitcoin mining companies reported a combined loss of well over $1 billion during the summer, the result of cryptocurrency markets experiencing an unprecedented crash . The three largest US bitcoin miners—Core Scientific, Marathon Digital Holdings, and Riot Blockchain—reported significant losses in recent quarterly earnings reports (thanks, Bloomberg ). Core Scientific took the biggest hit of the three with a loss of $862 million, with Riot Blockchain losing $366 million and Marathon suffering a $192 million loss during the crypto free-fall. The crash has forced the bigger bitcoin miners to sell off more coins than usual to repay debt and cover operational costs from Q2 into Q3, in hopes of riding out things until things stabilize and recover. Jaranc Mellerud, an analyst from Arcane Crypto, told Bloomberg, "Public miners are still dumping their bitcoin holdings at a higher rate than their production … [Read more...] about The biggest bitcoin miners lost over $1 billion during this year’s crypto crash
She-Hulk Bosses And Star Comment On Overworked VFX Artists Working With Marvel
Over the past few months, there's been a discussion online about VFX artists being displeased when working for Marvel Entertainment. According to one Reddit thread , some artists are done working with Marvel, and they've been harboring those feelings for quite some time. However, the cast and crew of the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Disney+ series stand in solidarity with these talented artists. During the TCA summer press tour She-Hulk panel, the showrunner discussed what's happening with VFX artists Marvel has hired to work on its movies and TV shows. "I feel incredibly deferential to how talented these artists are and how quickly they have to work," said EP and showrunner Jessica Gao. "Obviously, like much quicker than probably [the amount of time] given to them, in terms of like churning these things out. "I know that there's a lot of eyes on the CG and a lot of critique or whatever, but I do think that we have to be super conscious of, like you're saying, how the … [Read more...] about She-Hulk Bosses And Star Comment On Overworked VFX Artists Working With Marvel
Final Fantasy XIV Director Wants To Make “One More MMORPG From Scratch” Before He Dies
Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida wants to make one more MMORPG "from scratch" before he dies. "I am a game designer, so I always have several ideas for games," Yoshida said in a recent interview with Inverse . "I can't talk about them here, but I think that goes for any game designer. I am the kind of person who's happy as long as they can make games, so while there isn't anything in particular, I occasionally think that I would like to make one more MMORPG title, from scratch, before I die." Although Yoshida, affectionately referred to as Yoshi-P by the Final Fantasy XIV community, didn't go into specifics on what kinds of ideas he would like to see in a new MMORPG (or whether it would be a Final Fantasy-branded project or not) he did spend the interview imagining what the future of both MMOs and online games in general could look like. Quantum computing, for example, could have major effects on the genre and video games in general in the next five to 10 years, … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy XIV Director Wants To Make “One More MMORPG From Scratch” Before He Dies
Call Of Duty Devs Talk About What Goes Into Making A Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Mission
Activision has revealed the creative process of making Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Dark Water level, which was first showcased at Summer Game Fest Live. A Call of Duty blog post describes the trailer as a "vertical slice." That shows off core features, visuals, audio, and overall player experience. The campaign mission is meant to set the tone for what players can expect upon its release on October 28. "Dark Water balances being completely realistic while being completely ludicrous," said Rich Farrelly, lead-level designer at Infinity Ward. Sound designers for the game got creative and toyed with microphones on a lake to create authentic boat sounds used in the mission. At the same time, another recorded the sounds of precipitation and added rain sound to give the players a more immersive experience. A senior lead audio designer stated the engine being used opens itself up to better audio and is on par with some Hollywood films. A challenge that was faced was making … [Read more...] about Call Of Duty Devs Talk About What Goes Into Making A Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Mission

Wikipedia won’t take crypto anymore
Audio player loading… Wikimedia is the non-profit firm behind Wikipedia and a host of other sites that operate under similar principles, and has the goal of "developing and maintaining open content" and funding it. Now, after four months of community discussion and argument, it has announced that it will no longer be taking donations in cryptocurrency. The 'no crypto' campaign was started by the multi-talented Molly White (opens in new tab) , a software engineer, the creator of Web3 Is Going Just Great (opens in new tab) , a Wikipedia editor with the unbeatable name GorillaWarfare, and a sworn enemy of crypto-bros everywhere. Politics streamer Destiny receives indefinite ban from Twitch
Audio player loading… A politics-focused streamer called Destiny has been indefinitely banned from Twitch. A screenshot Destiny shared (opens in new tab) to his subreddit indicates that the ban can only be lifted on appeal, and that it was applied for "Promoting, encouraging, or facilitating the discrimination or denigration of a group of people based on their protected characteristics." Twitch has not provided a definitive motivation for the ban beyond that, but Destiny said in a Reddit post (opens in new tab) that he believes it was imposed "because of my claims that transwomen shouldn't compete with ciswomen in women's athletics," due of the likelihood that they'll dominate in their fields. That belief, expressed earlier this month, attracted widespread criticism on social media. Another potential cause, noted by Dot Esports (opens in new tab) , is a recent "debate" Destiny held with white nationalist Nick Fuentes. Fuentes was banned from Twitch in 2019, and … [Read more...] about Politics streamer Destiny receives indefinite ban from Twitch
