Laika’s Missing Link draws from a treasure trove of classic themes — it’s an adventure story set in Victorian times — but it’s also an impressively self-aware, updated piece. Each character, be it the self-important Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), the hapless Bigfoot Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis), or the widowed adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), breaks out of the mold set for them in ways that make it clear that, while this may be a period piece, it’s not a retread of old ground. “I wanted to set it up like it was this old, classic Hollywood romantic adventure story,” said writer-director Chris Butler in an interview with Polygon. “Whenever I’m writing anything, I like to play in very well-established genres. I like to walk well-trodden paths, if you like, but I do like to try and do a little subversion because that’s the joy of telling stories, is that you put your own spin on it.” That instinct toward … [Read more...] about Missing Link director Chris Butler breaks down the film’s awesome twist

This piece contains spoilers for Return of the Obra Dinn.Waves lap gently against the struts of the pier as seagulls wheel, dive, and caw overhead. Halyards on anchored sailboats gently clink in time with the movements of the water. A gentle rumble emanates from the engines of the docked Merchant Navy vessels, underscoring the whole scene. This is the harbour of Falmouth as it exists today. Situated at the mouth of the River Fal it remains a busy and important shipping hub for England's South East corner. Looking out from the pier towards the docks on a drizzly Saturday morning it's not hard to imagine the haunted corpse of a single ghost ship slowly drifting in to port. This is how Return of the Obra Dinn begins, the titular ship borne into the bay with damaged sails and a slaughtered crew. The player is hired by the East India Company to investigate the grizzly fate of the ship's crew and find out just how this came to pass. Set as it is during the early 1800's, Return of the Obra … [Read more...] about Exploring Falmouth and the naval history behind Return of the Obra Dinn
Easter eggs in games are an adored practice in the industry. Especially when they’re done right as well. Respawn hasn’t strayed from this tradition since we might have just discovered an Easter egg in their latest title. As we can see in this video here, Apex Legends is actually hiding the Loch Ness Monster in the game. So the easter egg was accessed by these players when they ran around the map, shooting Loch Ness Monster dolls. These weren’t just random objects they were shooting, since there was actually hit registration and damage numerals on the dolls. This means the developers definitely did intend for the dolls to be shot apart. What happened after was slightly more difficult to describe. We see a giant figure slowly emerge from the water. At first it just looks like a land formation but eventually after staring at it, you realize that it’s sentient. After towering over the surface of the water, Nessy simply swims further ahead until vanishing out of … [Read more...] about Apex Legends Has The Loch Ness Monster Easter Egg; A Giant Dinosaur!
With millions of players dipping into the new mega-hit battle royale Apex Legends and scavenging its Kings Canyon map for loot, it's cool to see that players are still uncovering new secrets which developer Respawn Entertainment snuck in. Two Easter eggs that have been uncovered since last week's surprise launch include a touching tribute to a developer's dog and the appearance of the Nessie plushie that's seen all kinds of sights throughout the Titanfall series.Let's start with the latter, just in case you're not emotionally prepared for a potentially tear-jerking story. As spotted by players and collated on Kotaku, the mini-Loch Ness Monster plushie Nessie has been a mainstay of Respawn's map design. The little lizard can be found tucked away in just about every single-player level and multiplayer map. Many Nessie locations have been documented, and Nessie lives on in Apex, which takes place in the same universe as Titanfall. She's currently nestled away in the training area, though … [Read more...] about Apex Legends has a hidden tribute to a developer’s dog (and a little Loch Ness Monster)
It seems that Capcom is not content with leaving the activity of beast tracking within Monster Hunter: World, as a new marketing campaign promises that the company will now pay anyone who is able to find evidence of the existence of some of folklore’s most popular monsters. In partnership with Jon Downes of The Centre of Fortean Zoology, Capcom is now offering UK residents a £50 000 ($70 000) cash prize to anybody who is able to provide undeniable proof that one of 10 vastly debated creatures does, in fact, actually exist. Those interested in engaging in a real-life monster hunt have until June 30 to prove that creatures such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Cornish Owlman, the Yeti, the Mongolian Death Worm, the Yowie, the Chupacabra, the Namibian Flying Snake, an Earth Hound, and mermaids exist. All submissions of evidence will be analyzed by Downes and his team in order to determine whether it is indeed verifiable, with any potential prize winners being … [Read more...] about Capcom Offering Reward for Finding Real Life Monsters
