The Nintendo Labo VR version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild leaves something to be desired, and that something has been perfectly captured by a fan-made first-person mod available via the CEMU emulator. As YouTuber BSoD Gaming explained in the video above, this mod comes from a team of three: MelonSpeedruns, SilentVerge, and SushiiZ. As you'd expect, it shifts Breath of the Wild's camera to a first-person perspective. What you might not expect - as I didn't when I first heard about it - is how good it looks and how intuitively it plays. I'd be happy to treat this mod as a simple Breath of the Wild walking sim, but it's capable of plenty more than mere sightseeing. First-person mods for third-person games are usually fairly clunky and awkward in practice, often resulting in your character model clipping in and out of view and your movements being hidden by the more limited perspective. This mod gets around those issues by transitioning back to a third-person camera … [Read more...] about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild looks extra gorgeous in this first-person mod

Ask any Legend of Zelda fan if Ocarina of Time’s place in the ‘greatest games of all-time’ pantheon should be disputed, and you’ll more often than not be met with surprise. A revolutionary video game for its time, with almost perfect review scores, and a fanbase that transcends even Nintendo’s loyal customers, and it’s hard to debate this fact. When you think about it though, just why is Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time considered the best game ever? We had no truly defining benchmark for how a 3D game should look, how it should play, and how expansive an open world title should be in 1998 when Ocarina of Time was released on the N64. But, Ocarina of Time is often the first game mentioned when the question of "best game of all time" is posed, so what has set it apart even 25 years after its initial release?Taking control in new waysWell, let's start with the control scheme. With Ocarina of Time, Nintendo ingeniously added the ability to map specific … [Read more...] about Why is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time considered the best game ever?
The other day, I spent a ludicrous amount of time debating whether to buy myself a personalised Love Island water bottle. The reasons against are manifold:1. I have enough water bottles2. I am 403. They are FIFTEEN POUNDS4. I do not live on an island with a load of sexy strangers, I live in Catford with blood relatives, so I do not really need to minimise the risk of someone drinking from my water bottle by having my name printed on it 5. PLUS DELIVERY On top of all this, it's not even like I'm a long time Love Island fan. This is the first series I've watched, having tuned in to see what all the fuss is about. It turns out the fuss is about people in bikinis worrying about the impact of Brexit on trees. Obviously, I am hooked. What has this got to do with video games, I hear my employer ask? Well, this is not the first time I have embraced a franchise I spent ages politely avoiding at best, and publicly deriding at worst. For years, I could never understand the appeal of the Legend of … [Read more...] about Legend of Zelda, Love Island and Me, by Ellie Gibson
My initial impressions of Moonlighter might be a bit much considering I only got my hands on the game for about 30 minutes at this past weekend’s PAX East 2018. But I have to say that even in the short amount of time that I had with it, the game really surprised me in a lot of ways. Moonlighter puts you in the role of a young shopkeeper who dreams of becoming a hero someday. Moonlighter‘s charming aesthetic has no business looking as good as it does. While we see developers go with a pixel art style pretty often nowadays, Moonlighter manages to animate how its world and characters interact and move with fluidity. This attention to detail really did help the game stand out to me. The title is set in a town known as Rynoka, which is conveniently located near a set of gates that lead to a whole bunch of different realms and dimensions. A young shopkeeper named Will uses these gates to collect a whole slew of unique weapons, armors, and items. … [Read more...] about Moonlighter is the Love Child of The Legend of Zelda and Economics
