Often, games are burnt into our memories by the light of the events that took place offscreen. Sometimes, the fused structures are happy ones: a snatch of music from Sonic 3 brings with it the smell of cut grass and caravan upholstery, while the cover art for Discworld II dredges up midsummer sweat and wafting net curtains, the night before a family holiday. Sometimes, it’s more complicated. I played delightful 2D explore ‘em up Starbound in the summer of 2017, the week my wife and I lost our first pregnancy, and the week my mum was given a few months to live. It was a shit time and, in truth, it’s hard to remember much from that month, let alone that week. But I remember that, in the moments where I didn’t need to exist for anyone else, I played Starbound. I was playing as one of the Novakid, aliens made of glowing gas who, due to a shared sense of whimsy, like to pretend to be cowboys. I was roleplaying it hard. I travelled all over the procedurally generated … [Read more...] about Have You Played… Starbound?

Like Alice B, I’ve been playing Ritual Of The Moon for the past few days. In case you somehow missed it, she’s been keeping a diary of her adventures as an exiled space witch in the game, which is designed to be played for a few minutes every day for a month. The game was released on Friday and I like it very much. I also like the bits of developer Kara Stone’s other work that I’ve played. Much of it has similar themes to Ritual Of The Moon, including both astronomy and astrology. As such, here’s a recommendation of one of her games to play, based on your star sign. Earth signs are typically (and appropriately) grounded people. That makes them the sort of friends that you can rely on. But sometimes you can’t be physically close to your friends, or even available via the magic of the internet thanks to sleep, work, or other commitments. Super Uplifting Friendship Simulator is a game to help with that, a Twine that replicates a good conversation with … [Read more...] about A Kara Stone game recommendation, based on your horoscope

While some fans of the first Life is Strange game have expressed their disappointment that the upcoming Life is Strange 2 won’t see the return of Chloe and Max, the game’s director, Michel Koch, says that new characters Sean and Daniel, are a better fit for the game’s themes. In a group interview at Gamescom, Koch was asked why the new game starred two male characters, while its predecessor had focused on two young women. In his reply, he said that while the first game had focused on social themes based around a high school, for which Max and Chloe “were perfect characters,” Sean and Daniel are used to explore a very different theme. Koch says “for Life is Strange 2, the main subject is education, it’s the main theme of the game. When you are going to play, everything you’re going to do, everything you say, every decision you’re going to make, might come back to what Daniel makes of it.” As the two characters progress, … [Read more...] about Sean and Daniel are “the perfect characters” to replace Life is Strange’s Max and Chloe
President Trump announced Tuesday night that Brett Kavanaugh, a federal appellate court judge based in Washington, D.C., is his pick to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy — a nominee who, if confirmed, will cement a conservative majority on the nation’s highest court.Trump made the announcement from the East Room of the White House.Kavanaugh worked closely with independent counsel Ken Starr during Starr’s Whitewater investigation of President Bill Clinton. As documented in the latest episode of the Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery,” Kavanaugh debunked the conspiracy theories that the Clintons were responsible for former aide Vince Foster’s death before becoming the primary author of the report laying out the case for Clinton’s impeachment. Kavanaugh was concerned with the more explicit sexual details of the report and attempted to redact them just before its publication. One of the possible grounds for … [Read more...] about Trump announces his pick to replace Justice Kennedy on Supreme Court
