There are few arenas where NBA star and former Indiana Pacers captain Paul George isn’t the person everyone wants to flock around. Epic Games’ Fortnite Pro-Am tournament is one of those rare places. McHale, Heder, George and Staples may have diehard fans outside of Fortnite‘s gigantic empire, swallowing everything in its distance, but within the empire, there are only a couple of heroes. And they are gods. Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Ali ‘Myth’ Kabbani, Alastair “Ali-A” Aiken and a few other notable streamers are Fortnite‘s slightly more awkward, equally charming version of Ringo, Paul, John and George, ready to stand in the spotlight before their adorning fans and ride the … [Read more...] about Fortnite’s Pro-Am tournament embraced a new type of video game god

When you first boot up Far Cry 3, players are met with an epigraph from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. “In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.” The inclusion of this quote was intentional: it was intended to telegraph to players that protagonist Jason Brody’s journey was about to get surreal. And Far Cry 3 lives up to that promise. Following up on Polygon’s recent fifth anniversary, we decided to ask a range of experts in the game industry the same question: What will things look like five years from now? While some cited practical predictions, like the rise of virtual reality, most centered around the structures that enable games to be made in the first place. And while many people see things improving, several also sounded warning bells about what the industry may be like and who may be in charge of it. The future isn’t necessarily what you think While many developers imagine a future where the game industry is overrun with new and exciting technology, many … [Read more...] about What will the game industry look like in five years?
