Electronic Arts may have suffered a disappointing financial quarter, but at least the company has games in two fan-favorite series coming within the next fiscal year. EA chief operating and financial officer Blake Jorgenson announced to investors that new Plants vs. Zombies and Need for Speed games are in the works, due out by April 2020. “We’re making adjustments to improve execution and we’re refocusing R&D,” Jorgenson said in a news release attached to EA’s third-quarter fiscal 2019 earnings. “Looking forward, we’re delighted to launch Anthem, our new IP, to grow Apex Legends and related Titanfall experiences, to deliver new Plants vs. Zombies and Need for Speed titles, and to add Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to our sports titles in the fall.” This is the first mention of new entries in the puzzle and racing franchises, respectively, and they’ve been a long time coming: Plants vs. Zombies’ most recent console release … [Read more...] about EA’s not done with Need for Speed, Plants vs. Zombies — new games on the way

CHINA is set to create 'social credit' scores for all of its permanent residents by 2020, according to plans published this week by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform. The credit scores will determine the extent of Chinese people's access to jobs, public services, travel, and even the ability to date. China has been slowly building a social credit score system for around four years now, after the State Council of China published a plan in 2014 to assign scores of 'trustworthiness' to the country's 1.4 billion citizens. Initially, the system that emerged was voluntary, with Chinese people being invited to sign up to receive scores based on what they do in public and online, and on who they associate with. Now, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform has announced that it will register all Beijing residents and businesses with the system by 2020, bringing it in line with the Chinese government's plan to make the nationwide system mandatory by … [Read more...] about China promises creepy Black Mirror ‘social credit’ scores for EVERYONE by 2020

The Destiny 2 1.1.3 update is now live, bringing with it Nightfall Strike scoring and Challenge Cards, emblem variants, changes to auras, a text chat option in public areas for PC players, and—this is the big one for fans of insect munitions—a fix to The Colony exotic grenade launcher that means it will now properly track enemies when the framerate is set higher than 30. The Colony, you see, fires "insectoid robot grenades" that track enemies and explode when they come in proximity. But at higher framerates, they don't track properly, which renders the weapon effectively useless for anyone with a decent gaming rig. Dialing back the framerate clears up the issue, but who wants to do that? (It sounds weird, but it's actually not the first framerate-related problem to come to light: In December of last year, players running the Curse of Osiris expansion at more than 60 fps found that they were being turned into greasy smears by Mercury's gravity cannons.) … [Read more...] about Destiny 2’s latest update fixes The Colony plus adds Nightfall scoring and Challenge Cards
