Next month, Grand Theft Auto 5 celebrates its third birthday on PC. And yet, despite its age, the open world crime simulator attracted record player numbers last year—driven by GTA Online's Doomsday Heist, which launched on December 12, 2017. Two days later, Rockstar rolled out the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack. Promising new players a leg up in Los Santos for £40/$40, I picked up the multiplayer welcome bundle and raised a single profile from level 16 to 85 in just short of five weeks. I maxed out my character's skill stats and earned a small fortune along the way, but sunk dozens of hours into the game during this time. Is the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack worth your money, then? Or would grinding free-of-charge, or picking up select Shark Cash Cards yield the same (or better) results? As you might expect, that depends on how you approach GTA Online. Let's take a closer look. What do you get? Rockstar bills the Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack as … [Read more...] about Is GTA Online’s Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack worth $40?

Android: Netrunner is a two-player card game set in a cyberpunk world where a hacker and a corporation angrily click their mouse buttons at each other until one of the following things happens: 1. The corporation researches a bunch of terrifying technology. 2. The hacker steals all the files the CEO accidentally left on his desktop. 3. The corporation runs out of ideas, and just sits there going: “Uhhh.” 4. The hacker dies from too much internet. We have a much better explanation below. For now, let’s say it’s a good game. The downside, however, is that it’s not a PC game. You can only play it in meatspace, with real, germ-spreading cards bought from fleshy human vendors of physical antiquities. At least, that’s how it seems. Turns out there’s an unofficial website called Jinteki.net that lets you play online for free. But is it worth the click? Matt and Brendan take a look. Brendan: lol hi matt, asl? Matt: Oh Brendan. You think I’m … [Read more...] about Netrunner online is rough but worth the click

Here in the United States, it was about 3 a.m. I had no idea what time it was in Sweden where my friend lived. He didn't care, either. He was drunk and sad and needed a shoulder to cry on, even though that shoulder was across the world. He wanted to die. I didn't want him to die. So, for three hours, I talked to him until he passed out and I could hear him snoring on our voice chat call. It wasn't the first time I'd talked a member of my guild down from the edge. In movies and cartoons, MMO guild masters, or GMs, are often depicted as a 30-year-old man with a neckbeard living in his mother's basement, living off Mountain Dew and Doritos. They're generally goofy and fit the outdated stereotype of a nerd—yelling at their computer screens, surrounded by two or three monitors and thousands of dollars of gaming equipment. I'm none of those things, but for the last five years I've run a 100-plus member guild in Ultima Online, an MMO I've now been playing for nearly two … [Read more...] about My life as the grandma guildmaster of Ultima Online Forever
It’s been quite some time since we heard about Nintendo Switch’s fabled paid-online play. Although information on Nintendo Switch Online has been around since the system’s reveal, it seems the actual product itself has went through a few reboots. Following a delay earlier last year, Nintendo has officially revealed that Nintendo Switch Online will be available in September 2018. Provided nothing about the service has changed since it was last detailed on June 1, 2017, Nintendo Switch Online will cost $19.99 for a full year membership. Buying into the online program grants access to online gameplay, lobbies, voice chat (via the mobile app), a “Classic Game Selection,” and Nintendo eShop deals. Meanwhile, run-of-the-mill users would have access to Nintendo eShop, friends, social media access, and parental controls. When the plan was first revealed, it was slated to start in Fall 2017. However, following those June recalibrations, the slot got delayed to a … [Read more...] about Nintendo Switch Online Service Officially Launches in September 2018
