It must be the sense of anonymity that compels people to share secrets with strangers. I was having a conversation with a woman in a bookshop when she decided to tell me something I could tell was troubling her about her nine-year-old son. "The thing is," she said (she had a twitch in her lower lip), "he's a bright boy, but... he still likes books with pictures in." As a children's bookseller, I hear things like this all the time. Proud parents like to tell me that their children no longer 'need' pictures in their books, as though they had just collected their children from a clinic specialising in the treatment of visual withdrawal. Sometimes it's the children themselves that need reminding: "You don't need books with pictures in- remember?" In either case, the message seems clear: pictures are mere training wheels for text, and the sooner we're done with them, the better. … [Read more...] about Picture books and video games: a backdoor into childhood

Game Over screens! Too bad, you lose, put some more money in. Game Over screens might have been a necessary way for arcade machines to wring a bit more money from our juvenile jeans but they didn't end there. Their influence carried over as games entered our homes, and crushing finality of the Game Over screen, which you can do little more than gawp helplessly at, can still be seen to this very day. It might not look the same, it might not use those iconic words, but it's there. Question is, which is the best? Happy Friday! … [Read more...] about Five of the Best: Game Over screens
Beast hopes the parents’ DNA still hides the building blocks for the X-Gene and it’s here that you get to see the impact being superpowered can have on the family. Revealing the kind of problems which never would arise if it weren’t for their mutant gene, the movie could give audiences some insight into the impact being a mutant has on your family. Although in the comic the parents eventually decide not to help, the movies don’t have to do the same. Most mutants might want to continue using their powers to help, but is it worth the personal pain, the hate from non-mutants, and the divisive pro-mutant politics? Sometimes the world doesn’t come first, not when your son’s or daughter’s life is on the line. Selfish is ok, and the movies don’t have to be afraid to show that. … [Read more...] about The secret to saving the X-Men movie franchise is hidden in the comics – here’s how to do it
Mentioning “moving fast”, Beauverger confirms that the skill I saw being used in the demo at the Focus What’s Next Showcase is a viable combat option. Vampires have evolved way beyond jumping, instead turning into clouds of black smoke and rushing towards their target, invulnerable whilst moving at this great speed. To affect your foes without drawing your pistol, you can also mesmerise them and take control of minds. We’ve already seen this in the demo, as you can use the skill to lead a victim away into the dark where you can feast on them. Witnessing this in combat, however, would be fascinating - could you turn them against their friends? Send them into a frenzy? Beauverger wouldn’t let anything else slip about the potential of mesmerising, so we’ll have to wildly speculate for now. … [Read more...] about Stop it Vampyr, you’re bloody spoiling us: 4 types of vampire (so far) and 3 ways to rip people apart?!
