THQ Nordic announced today that it has acquired Koch Media, the parent company of video game publisher Deep Silver, in a deal worth €121 million ($149 million). As part of the acquisition, THQ Nordic — formerly known as Nordic Games — is now the owner of game series Saints Row, Homefront, Dead Island, Metro and more. In other words, the new THQ now owns the brands the old THQ sold off after it filed for bankruptcy in 2012. A quick refresher on how we got here: THQ Nordic’s acquisition of Koch Media and Deep Silver brings the number of total employees at the new company to more than 1,600 across a combined 36 internal and external studios. THQ Nordic has acquired Koch Media for a whopping €121 million. Formerly known as Nordic Games, THQ Nordic changed to their current name in 2016 after buying developer/publisher THQ in 2014. The reason for this was for better name recognition since the company was still widely associated with the THQ properties that it has acquired. These IPs included 150 individual games including the Darksiders and Red Faction franchises. Koch Media founded the Deep Silver label in 2002. It has since published over 200 games, notably the Saints Row, Metro and Dead Island franchises. Developers operating under Koch Media and Deep Silver includes Volition, Fishlabs Entertainment, and Dambuster Studios. Volition developed the Saints Row and Red Faction franchises whereas Fishlabs Entertainment and Dambuster Studios are known for the Galaxy On Fire franchise and Homefront: The Revolution, respectively. THQ Nordic, publishers of the Darksiders games and recent jankfest Elex, have bought Koch Media, the companies have announced. Koch are the father-company of Deep Silver, who publish games like Saints Row, Metro, Dead Island, and Homefront: The Revolution. That means THQ Nordic now own alllll of those bad boys, among others. Due to all the combined plates this company now spins, they could now make a game where the hero of Mighty No. 9 fights jazzy paint-monster De Blob in a doomed bid for supremacy on Mars, aka, Red Faction 3. THQ Nordic, the Austria-based company currently in possession of the Darksiders, Red Faction, and de Blob properties, has acquired Koch Media, the parent company of Dead Island, Saints Row, and Metro publisher Deep Silver. The deal, which is set for approval later today, was worth €121 million (approximately $149 million).The acquisition means that THQ Nordic now owns all of Koch Media's assets, which includes its studios, intellectual properties, and licenses, such as 4A Games' rights to develop Metro games. de Blob owner THQ Nordic buys Saints Row and Dead Island owner Koch Media for 121m euro
THQ Nordic, the company behind the Darksiders and de Blob re-releases, has bought Koch Media, owner of Saints Row and Dead Island publisher Deep Silver, in a deal worth 121m euro. For that, THQ Nordic gets all of Deep Silver's studios and games, such as Volition (Saints Row), Dambuster (Homefront) and Dead Island. It also picks up Deep Silver's exclusive rights to the Metro games, which are developed by 4A. In a note to press, THQ Nordic said it has no plans to restructure Deep Silver, which hopefully means jobs are safe (there are 150 people currently at Volition, for example), and Koch Media will continue to operate as a separate entity within the THQ Nordic group. It also said it plans to soldier on with Deep Silver's current slate of in-development games.
