Why Nintendo Switch’s big summer game Octopath Traveler is a love letter to classic 16-bit RPGs
Nintendo Switch's big summer game Octopath Traveler, with its eight heroes and distinctive retro style, will be a welcome sight for anyone who did their early RPG questing in the days of Final Fantasy 6 and the SaGa series, but the game needs to appeal to a modern audience too. GamesRadar+ sat down with producer Masashi Takahashi and director Keisuke Miyauchi from Square Enix to find out more about the game’s inspirations, how they plan to win over fans of modern RPGs like Skyrim who are less familiar with JRPG tradition, and why you won't have to grind for glory. What do critics think of Nintendo's big summer game? Read our Octopath Traveler review round upWhy did you release two Octopath Traveler demos?Because it’s a game that uses pixel art, it’s really difficult to just look at a screenshot and get a sense of how the game plays. I’d like to have players hold it in their hands. I feel like it's easier for them to get a sense of how it plays after that. … [Read more...] about Why Nintendo Switch’s big summer game Octopath Traveler is a love letter to classic 16-bit RPGs
Pokemon Switch release date, news and everything else we know so far
As we inch closer and closer to E3, the rumours surrounding the upcoming Pokemon Switch game are increasing in size and number. The Pokemon Company and developer GameFreak have already confirmed the game is coming, but the latest rumours suggest that the pair of titles will arrive in the Autumn entitled Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu and Pokemon Let's Go! Eevee.GameFreak confirmed a Pokémon game is in development for Switch back at E3 2017. In the latest financial results for the company, it was confirmed that the next Pokémon RPG would arrive in "2018 or later", which isn't exactly reassuring, although that fact has been repeated in the latest Nintendo financial earnings. We'd expect a Pokemon Switch release date to lie somewhere around Christmas, with that "or later" part added as a buffer just in case that date slips into early 2019.Whenever it arrives, it'll be a big deal for The Pokémon Company. A mainline Pokémon game has never been released on a home console; … [Read more...] about Pokemon Switch release date, news and everything else we know so far
How Monster Hunter rose from niche import to an international sensation
I remember the day Capcom first showed us what would eventually be known as Monster Hunter. It was 2003, at the then-annual Capcom Media Day in Las Vegas, and of all the games they showed us that day, Monster Hunter stood out. There was the GameCube's Viewtiful Joe and P.N.03, and PS2's Devil May Cry 2, but I couldn't tear my eyes off this curiosity called Monster Hunter. We watched a CGI cinematic of what appeared to be a four-player cooperative multiplayer game, in which the squad would customize and optimize its gear to take down powerful monsters. I needed this. Badly. You have to understand that when I first learned about Monster Hunter, I was a grieving Phantasy Star Online widower. Earlier that year, SEGA bafflingly decided that what the PSO fanbase really wanted was a card game, not more of the then-peerless Diablo-lite loot action I'd been hopelessly addicted to. A card game. I wanted none of that, and apparently neither did many other people, as that was basically the end of … [Read more...] about How Monster Hunter rose from niche import to an international sensation
Pokémon on Switch
Despite the brilliance of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the zaniness of Super Mario Odyssey, it still feels like there's something missing from our Switch library. And yes, it does regularly take the form of a small, electric, yellow mouse by the name of Pikachu. Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are all well and good, but the 3DS is old hat nowadays. It's time for a Pokémon RPG - not just Pokkén Tournament DX - on the Switch. (And Animal Crossing Switch too please, while we're on it). So, there’s good news. And there’s bad news. GameFreak has confirmed a Pokémon game is in development for Switch... but you’re going to have to wait a while for it. In the latest financial results for the company, it was confirmed that the next Pokémon RPG would arrive in "2018 or later", which isn't exactly reassuring. Technically, 2025 is later than 2018 and we doubt we can wait that long. Whenever it arrives, it'll be a big deal for The Pokémon … [Read more...] about Pokémon on Switch
