Since the early 90s gamers have been clamoring for sequels to nearly every Star Wars title under the sun. Games like Rebel Assault, X-Wing Alliance, and Battlefront have all been rumored to be getting the reboot or sequel treatment, but alas none of those highly anticipated projects have ever made it out of the “what if” phase. So it’s with a cautious mind that we bring the news of another trademark registration by LucasFilm (parent company to LucasArts), this one for something called ‘First Assault.’Fusible broke the news about two trademark applications from LucasFilm, one for First Assault and one for Star Wars: First Assault, which would be used in connection with some form of online service, namely a video game. The obvious place Star Wars fans’ minds will jump is to Rebel Assault, the 1993 CD Rom game from LucasArts, but that isn’t necessarily a given. Yes, it’s been quite some time since LucasArts has placed gamers in the cockpit of … [Read more...] about LucasArts Trademarks ‘Star Wars First Assault’, Sequel to ‘Rebel Assault’?

Disney has large and very specific plans for their latest major acquisition and nothing will get in the way of it. When the deal was announced that George Lucas had sold Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, Disney made sure the world knew that the franchise would return with Episode 7 in 2015.Since that time, more and more elements of the Star Wars franchise that do not fit within the plans of building towards the return of the saga (Episodes 7-9 and a pair of standalone spin-off films) have seemingly been put on hold or outright canceled. Today, Lucasfilm Animation announced the end of the animated Clone Wars series while also shelving the in-development comedy, Star Wars Detours. We also heard the rumors that Star Wars 1313 development may have halted, and today, more curious news on the LucasArts side.We first came across the name Star Wars: First Assault last August when Lucasfilm trademarked the title. Upon first glance, the title immediately … [Read more...] about ‘Star Wars: First Assault’ Is A Precursor to ‘Battlefront 3’ – Will It Ever Release?
No thanks to LucasArts and their new owners at Disney, we’ve slowly been learning through leaks more and more about the Star Wars game that may never be: Star Wars: First Assault. We first discovered the downloadable shooter last summer and since, Disney has put a lid on any marketing efforts for the game that was originally intended for release this spring.Reports indicate Disney has put a halt to hirings at LucasArts and we now wonder whether or not Star Wars: First Assault – allegedly a precursor to Battlefront 3 – is being saved for upcoming events, possible E3, or whether it’s being canned entirely. For now, all we have are rumors, fan desires, and a few new screenshots.Kotaku, who have an inside source close to the game, shared a few new Star Wars: First Assault screenshots, highlighting the 8 vs. 8 online multiplayer gameplay. The first-person shooter features 16-player matches, putting players in the boots of the Rebels or … [Read more...] about ‘Star Wars: First Assault’ Screenshots Showcase Bespin & Tatooine Maps [Updated]
Star Wars Rebels underwent a dramatic transformation between its first and third seasons. What started out as a charming but ultimately shallow exercise in marrying Star Wars’ minutiae with teen TV tropes, has transformed into the richest human story in Lucasfilm’s beloved universe. Season 3’s myriad plot threads echo themes from the films - power struggles, the weight of familial obligation, finding new purpose in life, the hidden soul in hilarious robots - but explore them with admirable patience and subtlety, punctuating real drama with elegant, restrained action. What’s more, Rebels does all this while remaining the platonic ideal of a family friendly show; it’s deep and soulful but simple in a way that can hook adults and kids without condescending to either. Put simply, it’s everything that made the original Star Wars a success. This show managed to make Darth Maul one of Star Wars’ most interesting, sympathetic characters. Yes, that … [Read more...] about 6 questions I have after watching Star Wars Rebels season 3
If you like Star Wars and you like board games, then you definitely want Star Wars: Imperial Assault by Fantasy Flight Games in your collection. If for some reason you are sitting on the fence about it or you are new to board gaming, let me tell you why it’s awesome. To begin with, there are two games inside of the Imperial Assault box. The main draw to many board gamers is the Descent: Second Edition style, 1 vs Many campaign game. In addition to the campaign game though, Fantasy Flight has also included a fully realized skirmish game. Initially I thought that the skirmish game would be a fun distraction to play once or twice but it is really fun and only looks to get better as the planned Ally and Villain packs are released. The campaign game uses the foundation that Fantasy Flight has established with Doom, Descent and Descent: Second Edition and refines it, smoothing many of the (already minor) rough edges and making it absolutely hum. The Imperial Assault campaign is designed … [Read more...] about Star Wars: Imperial Assault Review – The Chosen One
Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.Have you? I haven’t, despite desperately wanting to for most of my life. It’s still filed in a dusty backroom of my head, in a filing cabinet marked ‘impossible dreams.’ My PC at the time was without, and probably wouldn’t have been able to support, a CD-ROM drive (which Rebel Assault so famously required in order to provide its copious FMV), so I stared at what then seemed photo-real screenshots in magazines with dismayed disbelief. There was a game which just looked like the Star Wars films. A game which, quite obviously, would be just like being in Star Wars myself. A part of me wants to believe – hell, believes – that Rebel Assault looks better than last year’s Star Wars: Battlefront. That one day I will upgrade my PC and finally be able to play Rebel Assault.I have no intention of playing Rebel Assault. I have a mixed … [Read more...] about Have You Played…Star Wars: Rebel Assault?
Star Wars: Rebel Assault is the series that made a younger me realise fancy technology doesn’t make a game fun or good. It looked like a movie! It had fancy pre-rendered 3D graphics! You sometimes controlled an actual real actor how could that even be! And it was a boring and janky rail shooter and yes I will fight you COME ON THEN.You don’t need me to stomp all over nostalgia, mind. The two Rebel Assault games are now on GOG in a $9.99 (£6.50-ish) bundle, so you can see for yourself. With a mix of pre-rendered backgrounds, FMV cutscenes, and FMV-ised real actors as game characters, Rebel Assault dances across the Star Wars movies. You get to blow up Star Destroyers, fly around on Hoth, and, yes, take the place of Luke Skywalker to blow up the Death Star yourself. Star Wars! And it’s rubbish and boring and clunky but heaven help me nostalgia is a heck of a drug.Who am I to crush dreams? I can’t take your experiences away from you, and I wouldn’t want … [Read more...] about Star Wars: Rebel Assault Blasts On GOG

A new Star Wars game is headed to Xbox Live Arcade, according to an eagle-eyed NeoGAF forum user. Cover art for Star Wars: First Assault (below right) bears the iconic Star Wars font and style, and appears to show a battalion of stormtroopers taking on rebel forces. The game has not yet been announced by LucasArts, but it is not entirely a mystery. In August, the company filed a trademark application for Star Wars: First Assault for "interactive video games," among other things. Additionally, www.StarWarsFirstAssault.com currently redirects to the official Star Wars website. A LucasArts representative told IGN, "It is an exciting time at our company right now, however, we don't have any announcements at this time." Though Star Wars: First Assault is not confirmed, LucasArts took the lid off Star Wars 1313 over the summer. That third-person action game is set beneath the surface of Coruscant, with players taking on the role of a lethal bounty hunter in a seedy atmosphere. … [Read more...] about Star Wars: First Assault coming to XBLA?
