Sometimes a game crashes and burns so loudly that it's impossible to ignore. But for others—following a flashy marketing campaign, maybe some preview events or E3 presentations—the release date passes, and soon after that they might as well cease to exist. They're played and reviewed, sure. And someone, somewhere, probably even loved them. But for the rest of us, they're forgotten until years later when someone mentions their name and we go, "Oh, yeah! That game! I forgot that came out." Here are some of the last decade's biggest games that disappeared from the public consciousness. Paragon Released: August 2016. Why we were excited: As someone who always bounced off MOBAs, like many others I had hopes that Epic's big-budget in-house entry into the genre, with its third-person shooter presentation, would be my best chance to finally become someone who understands what "jungling" means. Why we forgot it: Paragon had an identity problem. In response to … [Read more...] about The big games from the last decade we forgot ever existed

Elden Ring update makes summoning easier and finally lets you do the Varre quest solo
Audio player loading… FromSoftware just pushed out a new update for Elden Ring (opens in new tab) , making summoning a friendly face a whole lot easier, removing the online requirements for a quest and slapping some nerfs on a few meta skills and weapons. Patch 1.06 lets you send summoning signs to more areas, including regions you're not currently in. It should make finding a helper in quieter areas a lot easier now, though understandably you can only be summoned to areas you've already visited. The same is also true for invaders, so now you can invade a larger area, including regions you're not currently in. The update has also introduced an offline alternative for the White Mask Varre questline (opens in new tab) . Before now, the only way to advance was by invading someone else's game three times. Although you didn't actually have to fight or win against any other players, it was a pain for people playing offline. Now, those who don't fancy getting their hands … [Read more...] about Elden Ring update makes summoning easier and finally lets you do the Varre quest solo
Destiny 2 fans jump on leak as evidence that a new ‘poison’ subclass coming
Audio player loading… Be prepared to take this with a sizable pinch of whatever passes for salt in the Destiny 2 universe, but it appears an artist at Bungie may have inadvertently given a glimpse of the game's next subclass. The leak came in the form of a clip allegedly posted to an Artstation account, as first reported by DestinyTwoLeaks on Twitter. I can't confirm the provenance because the linked post has been pulled, but—this being the internet—the clip is still easy enough to find. I've embedded it at the top. At first glance, it just shows a Titan performing the 'Swing of the Scythe' finisher, which is available as part of the current season pass. However, cast your eyes down to the bottom left and things get more interesting. The HUD elements are all green, which doesn't tally with any current subclass in the game. Most intriguing, the super icon (ie your ult) is also new. Finally, the character has three melee charges available, which isn't possible with any … [Read more...] about Destiny 2 fans jump on leak as evidence that a new ‘poison’ subclass coming
Researchers find way to shrink a VR headset down to normal glasses size
Audio player loading… Researchers from Stanford University and Nvidia have teamed up to help develop VR glasses that look a lot more like regular spectacles. Okay, they are rather silly looking due to the ribbons extended from either eye, but they're much, much flatter and compact than your usual goggle-like virtual reality headsets today. "A major barrier to widespread adoption of VR technology, however, is the bulky form factor of existing VR displays and the discomfort associated with that," the research paper published at Siggraph 2022 (opens in new tab) says. These aptly named "Holographic Glasses" can deliver a full-colour 3D holographic image using optics that are only 2.5mm thick. Compared to the traditional way a VR headset works, in which a lens magnifies a smaller display some distance away from it, shrinking all the prerequisite parts down to such a small size is quite the spectacular step forward for VR. The Holographic Glasses prototype uses … [Read more...] about Researchers find way to shrink a VR headset down to normal glasses size
Subnautica studio Unknown Worlds has a new game coming later this year
Audio player loading… In October 2021, PUBG Corporation parent company Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds (opens in new tab) , the developer of the outstanding undersea survival game Subnautica and its 2021 sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero. Today we got our first look at what the studio's getting up to for its first project under the Krafton flag, and it is not another Subnautica game. Project M, as it's called in Krafton's FY2021 financial report (opens in new tab) , is "a turn-based strategy game set in a sci-fi world" that's being developed for PC and mobile platforms. Unknown Worlds is aiming for an early access release later this year, and is pursuing an "'easy-to-learn, hard-to-master' formula ... that is fun to watch others play," presumably suggesting the studio is hoping to leverage the influence of streamers. Even without any further details, it's quite a shift for Unknown Worlds, whose previous works have been exclusively first-person games, going all the way … [Read more...] about Subnautica studio Unknown Worlds has a new game coming later this year
PUBG’s parent company now owns Subnautica studio Unknown Worlds
Audio player loading… PUBG Corporation parent company Krafton will soon be the proud new owner of Subnautica studio Unknown Worlds. Krafton said the acquisition will help it "expand its IP and diversify the company’s portfolio of groundbreaking games." Playerunknown's Battlegrounds is the jewel in Krafton's crown, but Unknown Worlds will actually be its sixth studio: It also owns mobile studios RisingWings and Dreamotion, Bluehole and PUBG Studios, and Glen Schofield's Striking Distance Studios, which is currently working on a Dead Space-style survival horror game call the Callisto Protocol that, for some reason, is set in the PUBG universe . "It was immediately apparent how closely Unknown Worlds and Krafton are aligned in the way we think about games and game development," Unknown Worlds founder and CEO Charlie Cleveland said in a statement . "Subnautica and PUBG both started humbly and evolved successfully through constant iteration and feedback. We want to bring … [Read more...] about PUBG’s parent company now owns Subnautica studio Unknown Worlds

Predator Prequel Prey’s Debut Prowls To Become Hulu’s No. 1 Premiere
Predator prequel Prey has become the No. 1 premiere on Hulu across all film and TV series debuts, according to The Hollywood Reporter . The publication is citing a report from Disney, who, like many streamers, does not disclose total hours viewed in these types of announcements. That said, the movie was reportedly the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories based on the metric of total hours watched in the first three days of its release. The film hit Hulu stateside on August 5, and has apparently enjoyed a strong opening weekend on streaming after the franchise has historically developed a checkered past at the box office. Set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey follows Naru, the skilled warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly-evolved alien predator. In GameSpot's Prey review , writer Mat Elfring says "if you're a longtime fan of the Predator lore, digging into the … [Read more...] about Predator Prequel Prey’s Debut Prowls To Become Hulu’s No. 1 Premiere
Watch these guys speedrun planet earth
Audio player loading… If you were unexpectedly teleported to a road in South Africa mid-blink, how long after opening your eyes would it take you to figure out that you were in South Africa? For GeoGuessr speedrunner Havrd, the answer is a little under seven seconds. By then, I probably would have just started to establish that I was on planet earth. GeoGuessr (opens in new tab) is a web game that drops players into a random Google Street View location and challenges them to figure out where in the world they are. It's fun to play cooperatively with friends, partially for the laughs that come from realizing a first impression was completely wrong, and you're nowhere near Paraguay. For Havrd, though, being wrong isn't even part of the game. It's just a matter of how quickly he can guess correctly. At last year's AGDQ (opens in new tab) speedrunning event, Havrd pulled off a "slow" GeoGuessr perfect score run in 31 minutes and 31 seconds. To get that perfect score, … [Read more...] about Watch these guys speedrun planet earth
Prey is the perfect blueprint for a killer Predator game
I'd suffered through too many bad Predator movies to get excited about Prey, but now I'm an evangelist spreading the good news: this is the best Predator movie since Arnie flexed his muscles in the jungle. It's striking but understated, leaving plenty of room between the lavish violence to build tension and develop not just Naru, played by the superb Amber Midthunder, but her alien adversary as well. And now that we've finally got another great Predator movie, wouldn't it be nice if we got a game to match? Predator hasn't exactly gone ignored by game developers: there's a long list of adaptations going all the way back to 1987, though in most of them the spotlight is shared with the xenomorphs. This was the case with the best Predator games: 1999's Aliens versus Predator and its 2001 sequel. There was even an AvP RTS in 2003. But aside from an appearance in Mortal Kombat X, there's not been much Predator love for years. When Predator: Hunting Grounds came along in 2020, then, my … [Read more...] about Prey is the perfect blueprint for a killer Predator game
