Let’s face it: video game movies have a reputation of being pretty lackluster. Detective Pikachu may have turned out alright, but it’s hard to forget the terrible live-action adaptations of such beloved franchises of Super Mario Bros, Doom, and the disastrous blend of IP in Pixels. The following list of planned video game films makes us scratch our heads wondering why they’re currently in development, as it’s hard to imagine how a Space Invaders or Tetris movie would translate to the big screen. Strangest Video Game Movies | Space Invaders Warner Bros bought the rights to Space Invaders in 2014, announcing that A Beautiful Mind producer Akiva Goldsman was on board. Little else about the project has emerged five years later, though Warner’s New Line Cinema production studio recently stated that Mortal Kombat film reboot writer Greg Russo will be handling the script. Given the news, it’s safe to assume that … [Read more...] about Strangest Video Game Movies in Development

Video game movies have, traditionally, been pretty awful, but there seems to be a resurgence of video game-themed films making their way to the big screen of late, and they do seem to be improving, with films like Detective Pikachu releasing to fair reviews. While there are certainly exceptions to this, it’s a pretty good time to be a fan of video game movies. Space Invaders is the latest video game franchise getting the movie treatment, with Greg Russo writing the script for the film. Russo is also handling the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie as well as a number of other video game projects. As of right now, there aren’t any details as to when the Space Invaders movie will actually release, or even enter production for that matter. Needless to say, it’ll likely be quite some time before audiences get any solid details about the film, as it seems like adapting such a simple game will take a fair amount of work to turn into a cohesive story that stays true to the … [Read more...] about Mortal Kombat Writer Working On Space Invaders Movie
Before we get to The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, let’s talk about Trolls. Yes, Trolls as in the vehicle for “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake, Trolls as in the movie about the high-haired Troll dolls created by Thomas Dam that lost most of their cultural currency going into the 21st century, Trolls as in props to our pals The McElroy Brothers who actually managed to get cast in Trolls 2. The reason I bring it up is because the movie is — improbably — pretty good, and the most notable recent work of director Mike Mitchell, who is also responsible for The Lego Movie 2. The Lego Movie was lightning in a bottle. Despite being a film based on a toy, it was visually inventive and quirky enough that didn’t feel like an ad (though it certainly worked in that respect). The bar for The Lego Movie 2 was set high, and while the sophomore jaunt into the world of living Legos (counting The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie as side … [Read more...] about The Lego Movie 2 is an animated odyssey about Chris Pratt’s action-movie career
The first teaser for The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, the highly anticipated sequel to 2014’s The Lego Movie, shows a new side of the Lego world. After the events of the catastrophic “Taco Tuesday” from the first movie, Bricksburg is left in a post-apocalyptic state, reminiscent of Mad Max and other sci-fi thrillers. But infused with the bleak, desolated landscape is the usual Lego charm and humor. While everything might not be awesome, Emmet still believes that it is. Even an alien invasion won’t get him down! Stephanie Beatriz, Will Arturo and Tiffany Haddish join the cast alongside returning Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett and Allison Brie. The heroes of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part will face a new threat: Lego Duplo. The full synopsis can be read below: The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city. It’s been five years since everything was awesome … [Read more...] about The first Lego Movie 2 trailer shows us a post-apocalyptic Lego world
Ready Player One is out in cinemas, and promises to immerse viewers in the wild, pop-culture filled world of the Oasis, first dreamed up by author Ernest Cline and now brought to life by Steven Spielberg himself. When Cline was first writing his seminal novel, the virtual reality technology which allows protagonist Wade Watts to enter the Oasis sounded more like fiction than fact but, today, VR headsets can be found in the homes of millions of people, and the hardware's only becoming more ambitious with every passing day. Virtual reality is now very much a part of our reality, even if the likes of PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive can't claim to be nearly as powerful as the amazing gadgetry seen in Ready Player One. Either way, it's the ideal time to look back at the films that have portrayed the technology on the big screen before now, and determine just how accurate they've managed to be in their predictions so far.Lawnmower Man (1992)The movie: Brett Leonard’s … [Read more...] about 11 visions of VR that movies got wrong.
