For all the terrifying scares in Dead Space—necromorph babies, giant tentacles, and ghostly whispers—one of my favorite moments is one that has no monsters at all. A few hours into the game, you navigate a zero-gravity section of the Ishimura on your way to the engine room. During this entire sequence, there's barely any sound—everything is muted by the vacuum of space to the point where even your shotgun sounds like a distant thud. Then, after re-compressing at an airlock, you open the door to one of the most horrifying sounds known to humankind: the ungodly wail of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.Though it's been a fun fact that's been circling the internet for a while now, I only just learned that the source of this awful noise is none other than the train millions of California Bay Area residents commute on every day—as if I needed another reason to think of San Francisco as a nightmarish hellscape. You can watch the video above to see the exact … [Read more...] about One of Dead Space’s scariest sounds is San Francisco’s public transportation

For all of the money and effort invested into the open worlds where we spend so much time, it’s amazing how many ways we’re given to ignore their construction. Trained to ignore them, by the way the games they’re built around are designed. Maps are filled with icons containing vital missions and content and collectibles, so we set a course to the nearest desirable one and follow a line on the minimap until we reach our destinations. Turning on the secondary vision mode of Rocksteady’s Batman games, Detective Vision, is made so essential by its usefulness in identifying secrets and fighting baddies, that you can spend most of the game breezing by the sights of their graphic novel grandeur brought to virtual life. All for the sake of finding the next breakable wall. While it might have disappointed some players and critics on its release, Watch Dogs actually found ways to emphasize the world its developers painstakingly crafted. Roots its successor paid off to … [Read more...] about Watch Dogs 2 made San Francisco much more than just a playground
This week, Fortnite Battle Royale players were abuzz at the release of the release of the new Raven skin. It was easily one of the best-looking skins that Epic Games had released for the Battle Royale mode, but now it is gone. In its place, Fortnite Battle Royale has added the Dark Vanguard skin, which further plays into the space theme of Season 3 and is available for 2,000 V-Bucks. In this case, the Dark Vanguard has the familiar design of an astronaut, with some darker and more futuristic flair.Obviously, the Dark Vanguard skin for Fortnite Battle Royale is not on the level of the Raven skin, but it’s a new legendary skin and that is always going to draw some eyes. It doesn’t hurt that most of the popular Fortnite streamers and content creators wear the newest and latest skins, so viewers/fans are likely to see Dark Vanguard a lot these next few days.Alongside the release of Dark Vanguard, Fortnite Battle Royale has also added a new glider called Orbital Shuttle for … [Read more...] about Fortnite Releases Dark Vanguard Skin and Space Shuttle Gliders
I’ve always wanted to go to an IRDC (International Roguelike Developers Conference), but they’ve always been in Europe, not easy for me to reach from way out here in East Asia. More recently IRDC has also made its way into the US, but always out on the East Coast, so still not quite within my means. Then I noticed a number of other developers signing on to this “Roguelike Celebration” event being hosted by genre enthusiasts Noah, Britta, and Asheesh in San Francisco for a day of activities aimed at both players and developers. My brother happens to live right down the road from the venue, only about 10 hours by plane from me, and I figured this is the best opportunity I could hope for short of hosting an event myself, so San Francisco it is! :D I’ll not only get to meet some Cogmind players who I already know will be there (maybe you, too?), but also a number of other developers, several of which I’ve known only online for some time now. And … [Read more...] about Roguelike Celebration–See you in San Francisco?
