By the early 90s, comic books and nerd culture had already been accepted as a medium that was consumed by both children and adults equally and without shame or vilification. It was over the next two decades that comic books, science-fiction, video games, and other mediums and genres began to hit the mainstream and contained less of a stigma than they ever had. Thus, the desire to create content based on these universes that was both appealing for younger audiences while still maintaining a tone that was acceptable for adults grew exponentially. It is this type of creative direction that makes up the allure of Traveller’s Tales’ LEGO video game franchise – a franchise that revels in toning down largely mature content to cater to children’s sensibilities while still retaining that maturity.Traveller’s Tales has a long resume of LEGO titles that include franchises such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Carribean, and more recently Batman … [Read more...] about What If: The Next LEGO Game is Based on Star Trek: The Original Series?
Scotty on star trek
It’s been a good year for sci-fi at E3 2012 – especially with the recent announcement that LucasArts is developing Star Wars 1313 – a mature bounty hunter story set in “A Galaxy Far Far Away…” However, that wasn’t the only high-profile film franchise set for a cinematic third-person shooter game tie-in – since Digital Extremes, partnered with Paramount Digital Entertainment and Namco Bandai, is set to release a new Star Trek game set in J.J. Abrams’ movie reboot universe.Story details are still mostly tight under-wraps but the game will act as a prequel to the yet-to-be titled Star Trek sequel – currently slated for a May 17th 2013 release date – and, as a result, players should expect to see the title sometime in Q1 next year. We initially previewed the Star Trek game at E3 2011 – though, at the time, a lot of information was still in-flux (or under-embargo). However, this round we were privy … [Read more...] about ‘Star Trek: The Game’ Preview & New Screenshots
Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. This is my first time with Interplay’s TOS-set point and click adventure game since the 90s. I was braced for awful things. I was wrong. It’s still rather lovely – and, if the Abramsverse leaves you pining for the more measured approach of the Roddenberry years, rest assured that this is very Star Trek indeed. When I played it back on my 486, I played the floppy disk version – which meant no voices. Today, I played the later CD-ROM version, replete with the familiar tones of the original cast. The audio of this game is beautiful, even if a couple of the actors clearly sound as though they’re reading from a script (although what’s new there?). The hum of the bridge, retro bleeps and pews, famous themes rendered in surprisingly appropriate MIDI … It’s so, so Star Trek. I’m impressed by quite how much such an early, basic … [Read more...] about Have You Played… Star Trek: 25th Anniversary?
It’s Star Trek a-go-go lately, with every dang series hitting Netflix UK last week and a new movie out in a fortnight. Not wanting to be left out, free-to-play MMORPG Star Trek Online [official site] today launched a new expansion which crosses over with The Original Series and Star Trek Beyond and other things in ways that would be baffling if you treated these timelines as a serious history rather than plot devices to tell fun stories. (Please don’t explain timelines to me. Any of them. Anyone.) They’ve even got Walter Koenig to play Chekov again. Here’s the official word on the Agents of Yesterday expansion: “Agents of Yesterday sends players on a mission to save the future by protecting the past. The expansion allows players to create a brand-new Captain from Star Trek: The Original Series, the quintessential television show that gave way to one of the most popular science-fiction franchises of all time. Captains can explore planets taken directly from … [Read more...] about Star Trek Online Expansion Goes All Timey-Wimey

As of this morning, there are several locations throughout the game that will allow people to take a moment to remember Spock, Leonard Nimoy, and other departed friends from Star Trek history.”Responding to the community’s choice of gathering spot for their impromptu tribute to Nimoy, the central structure of the fountain found on Vulcan will be replaced with a statue of Spock bearing the inscription “Live Long and Prosper”. Today we mark the passing of Leonard Nimoy, who died this morning at the age of 83. Nimoy was, among other things, a musician, a photographer and a poet. But he will always be known as Mr. Spock from the original Star Trek television series, a role that predates even William Shatner's iconic Captain Kirk. That seminal program ran for just three seasons, but it casts a long shadow over television history and the science fiction genre in general. Even if you've seen them all dozens of times before, it's hard to recommend a better way to spend your weekend than with Spock, Bones, Scotty, Uhura and Chekov.A high-definition boxed set is out now and sure to be selling briskly, but Netflix subscribers can stream every episode right now. Today, in memory of Leonard Nimoy, we recommend three of his best episodes.May his memory always live long and prosper. "Amok Time" from season two, episode one: After Spock takes ill, Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise help him return to his home planet of … [Read more...] about Remember Leonard Nimoy with three of his best Star Trek episodes
