Team Junkfish is an indie developer working on a new title called Attack of the Earthlings. It takes the tactical RPG standards of humans vs aliens and turns it around in a new and funny way. The earthlings are in charge of a comically dysfunctional interstellar energy corporation called Galactoil. In typical human fashion, they came to the aliens’ sector in space and uncaringly destroyed their home planet in order to further their energy exploitation. This, obviously, did not sit well with the aliens. “Humans are the ultimate invasive species, and the alien Swarmers need YOU in order to repel the human scourge from their home planet.” In a turn of pace, Attack of the Earthlings has players take the role of the aliens known as “Swarmers”. The game plays in turn-based tactical combat mixed with stealth as the swarmers get the drop on the humans. According to Team Junkfish, the game’s humor was influenced by shows like The IT … [Read more...] about Tongue-In-Cheek Tactical RPG Attack of the Earthlings Gets a Release Date
I am so tired of being the hero. Too often RPGs rely on the 'chosen one' trope to drive a world-rending conflict and take you on a hopscotch journey throughout whatever pretty open world you're stuck in this time. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance, no one knows your name. It might look like Skyrim at a glance, but you're not going to be graduating from the mages' college or throwing fireballs at dragons on snowy mountaintops. Bohemia in the 1400s was a much simpler (yet no less violent) place. Lords were the dragons, monks were the mages, and arrows the fireballs. Chances are, you'd be born into a working class and stuck there for life, the very dream of swinging a sword an impossible one. In fact, that you get to swing a sword at all is one of the few times developer Warhorse Studios' bends the truth for the sake of play. You're not playing the hero this time around. You're a pretty big loser actually. Like, the kind of guy that the nobles won't look at unless they need manual labor … [Read more...] about Being a nobody is better than saving the day in historical RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance
I can’t stop thinking about how good Golf Story is. It’s a surprising turn of events, because my interest in the actual game of golf is basically zero. So how the hell did I get sucked into the world of this retro-looking golf game on the Nintendo Switch by developer Sidebar Games? To understand what makes Golf Story so charming, you have to go beyond the elevator pitch, which is basically “an RPG, but with golf.” This game manages to make a world governed by golf a universe that I actually want to be a part of. To get around the inherent boringness of golf as a game, Golf Story pushes the full 18 holes to the margins. Instead, the meat of the game is everything else: a full cast of characters with backstories to dive into, a handful of multi-tiered quests to complete and an abundance of characters scattered across every golf course handing out side quests. It feels more like an open-world adventure title than a golf sim. The overworld even resembles The … [Read more...] about Golf Story is a delightful RPG — and the golfing isn’t bad, either
Fable 4 – from a studio previously dedicated to car games? Hell, why not. Fable 4 may be in the works at Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, according to a trail of Internet sleuthing that caused me to bite through my teacup in excitement. Let’s start with some established facts: Playground Games is working on an open world RPG, and has expanded its office space and poached a bunch of UK talent to do so. Now let’s look at something less concrete: according to a user on ResetEra, the quasi-successor to NeoGAF, a bunch of upcoming Xbox One titles were leaked to developers via the Xbox Live API. As reported by WCCFTech, the alleged former Xbox game developer did not share the full details of the leak, they hinted at imminent Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3 betas, a third-person Perfect Dark game developed by The Coalition and another team, four-player campaign co-op for Crackdown 3, a Forza Horizon game set in Japan, Age of Empires 4, a Halo mode with a really … [Read more...] about Holy shit, is that open world RPG the Forza Horizon team is working on actually Fable 4?
