Over three years ago, before Cogmind’s first alpha version was released, I wrote about robot hacking. Well we can keep that post around for posterity and historical research purposes, but as of the next version robot hacking is undergoing radical changes and a major expansion. This post will explain the fundamentals of the new system (much of this content was originally serialized in a series of SITREPs on the forums and Steam news). First a bit of history. Back in the pre-Alpha days (2015 and earlier), robot hacking was never fully realized. Ideally it would be designed to fit in with all the other systems, but there had really been almost no playtesting since the 7DRL and three quarters of the world had yet to be created, so there wasn’t much to go on at the time. Rather than build up something large right away, a better long-term approach would be to just add a smaller functional placeholder that could be tweaked or possibly replaced when necessary as the rest of the … [Read more...] about Robot Hacking, Take 2

The production company, Bad Robot by J.J. Abrams and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have entered into a partnership with Tencent games to launch a new video game division called Bad Robot Games. J.J. Abrams himself will not be the head instead Bad Robot Games will be lead by Dave Baranoff who has been in charge of Bad Robot’s games and interactive content creation since 2006. The company will use its expertise in movies to hire writers, creative directors, visual artists, designers and in-house artists to develop both the indie and AAA level games for PC, mobile and consoles. Tim Keenan who’s known for his indie game ”Duskers” will take the role of creative director for the new division. J.J. A while back I mentioned a design initiative based on the concept of “map dynamics,” aimed at increasing player focus on the map area as opposed to the message log or other windows. After the initial spate of related features and animations, this part of development was put on hold as the rest of the game took shape. With much of the game complete, and development inching ever closer to needing a more polished-looking dynamic interface before reaching out to the average gamer, it was about time to revisit this topic since we could now identify all the necessary features and implement them in a consistent manner all at once. Before now we didn’t have a dedicated system for handling the large number of UI animations that would layer over the map area, as it’s tough to design a system without knowing the full extent of what you need it to handle. The resulting implementation (i.e. code-wise) is less flexible than I’d like it to be, but on the outside it looks … [Read more...] about UI Feedback: Map Dynamics 2.0
In 2014, Over the Moon Games released The Fall, an action-platformer starring A.R.I.D. (an acronym forArmoured Robotics Interface Device; also spelled Arid), an A.I. onboard a combat suit housing the human pilot Colonel Josephs. Her objective is to save the pilot by any means necessary. Without spoiling anything, the game tells a clever story that will certainly surprise you by the time the credits roll. The Fall Part 2: Unbound starts right where its predecessor left off continuing Arid’s journey of pushing her own programming, as well as pushing the boundaries a few other robots to help her complete her new mission: to save herself. However, doing so will take some work. After the first game concludes — which you can watch a quick recap before you begin — the combat suit Arid is housed in is dismantled leaving her vulnerable to a virus from an unknown user. In a short series of events, you find a loophole that lets you take a physical form within a global … [Read more...] about The Fall Part 2: Unbound Review — A Great Sci-Fi Tale Bound In Subpar Gameplay
