Believe it or not, The Walking Dead is losing its leading man Rick Grimes sooner than you think. Sob. Andrew Lincoln confirmed his departure from the long-running zombie series at San Diego Comic Con 2018 and it’s looking likely that it’ll happen during The Walking Dead season 9, episode 5. While it’s pretty hard to imagine the show without Rick, the bigger question is how it’s going to happen? While death by Walker seems like the most traditional way out for the former Sheriff, it’s doubtful AMC will go for something so obvious and with new showrunner Angela Kang promising a bold “new show” and “new narrative” this season, we might see Rick bow out in a more surprising way. The Walking Dead season 8 returns February 24 – and we now know exactly what will be waiting for us on the other side of that Walker bite, thanks to these new images. The shots show a different side to Carl, Michonne, and Rick than the ones we’re used to. Could they be hinting at a show willing to go in a completely different direction for its next eight episodes? In it, Carl’s fate was sealed: you just don’t come back having a chunk taken out of you by the shambling undead. There's still a month before The Walking Dead returns, but the show is preparing for the climax of the all-out-war that that was initiated when Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) introduced himself in Season 6. In new key art for the return of Season 8, The Walking Dead is promising these next episodes will be the last stand between Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Negan, as the former also comes to terms with his dying son, Carl (Chandler Riggs). The Walking Dead season 8 is going to be returning with a bumper episode. After the biting events of the mid-season finale, there’s going to be a lot of ground to cover. The Walking Dead’s mid-season finale managed to accomplish something the series has been in desperate need of: change. [Warning: The following contains spoilers for the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead.] Last night’s episode ended with Carl Grimes, one of the youngest cast members on the show and a member of the original five characters, revealing that he suffered a zombie bite. The bite occurred a few episodes prior and, because of its location on his body, there’s no way to amputate the infected area. This means Carl is definitely going to die — slowly and probably not until this current season’s finale or even the beginning of the next season — but he will either succumb to the bite or someone will have to put him out of his misery.
