Today’s update for Id’s twitchy online FPS Quake Champions holds a special place in my heart – much as I appreciate its Quake 3-inspired core, Quake 2 was the first competitive FPS I got into. On top of a new attack-and-defense playmode called Slipgate, new champion Athena feels like she’s been lifted straight from Quake 2, laser-like grappling hook and quirky physics intact. Below, videos introducing Slipgate and Athena. The game is in early access and free-to-play, and the Slipgate update is out now. You can see the full patch notes here. While my go-to character for Quake Champions has always been Quake 1’s ranger, I’m retiring him in favour of Athena’s even more offbeat style. Her active special ability is a grappling hook, although anyone who played Quake 2 online will know that it behaves more like a rope-coloured laser, pulling you immediately towards the point of impact. The rope has picked up a few new tricks, including doing damage on … [Read more...] about Quake Champions adds Slipgate mode and Quake 2-style character Athena

BETHESDA today revealed what had been rumoured for some time -- Rage is getting a sequel and it's going to be here soon. A sequel to the iD software post-apocalytic Mad Max style shooter has been rumoured for some time, with cryptic teasers last week suggesting more information was coming today. The announcement trailer shows a quickfire sequence of assorted post-apocalytpic hoodlums. They're waving all manner of armaments -- with a focus on some particularly gruesome melee and throwing weapons -- but bright splashes of colour and an even brighter poppy soundtrack behind it. The reveal trailer also features a brief glimpse of a massive troll-like creature, hinting at some epic boss battles to come in the finished game. If the teaser did its job and whetted your appetite you don't have long to wait; there's a gameplay reveal coming tomorrow. The post-apocalyptic sequel was included on a massive list of games that Walmart's Canadian operation accidentally listed earlier in the week ahead … [Read more...] about Rage 2 revealed with teaser trailer – and gameplay is coming TOMORROW
I don’t tend to think about how many things I murder in a murder-related videogame. I just remove whatever obstacles are in the way and move on, in the time-honoured tradition of solving problems in action games. In co-op online stabber-shooter Warhammer: Vermintide 2, I’m unusually conscious of the body count. It is, if you’ll forgive a little early-90s melodrama, extreme. That’s just one reason why Vermintide 2 successfully escapes the shadow of ‘it’s just Left 4 Dead but with Games Workshop’ faint-praise damning that its predecessor stood within. I have, for the record, zero remorse or guilt about how many dismembered ratman carcasses or lily-white, headless trunks of Chaos warriors I and my e’er-bragging comrades leave in our first-person, co-operative wake. It’s just that I really noticed how thick the streets ran with gore whenever we had survived another swarm of Skaven or onslaught of Northmen, which is really saying … [Read more...] about Wot I Think – Warhammer: Vermintide 2
