Yesterday, Blizzard officially confirmed that Overwatch hero 27 is Brigitte Lindholm, a support and tank character who also happens to be Torbjörn’s daughter. But while most Overwatch fans were delighted with the reveal of the character and are excited to get a chance to play as her, one game developer took to social media to raise questions about Brigitte’s design. On Twitter, Stew Chisam, the president of Hi-Rez Studios, the developer of Paladins: Champions of the Realm, highlighted the similarities between Brigitte and a Paladins character named Ash. Ash and Brigitte’s designs do indeed look very similar; both women are clad in bulky, angular armor that includes the same shapes (the chest plates are both pointy, for example), both have stern expressions, and both women wield huge weapons too. The two women also have similar abilities. In Paladins, Ash has abilities such as Shoulder Bash which can knock back her opponents, while in Overwatch, Brigitte has a … [Read more...] about Did Overwatch Just Copy a Paladins Character?
The thing about battle royale modes, right, is that the broad principle can be bent to many different games across different genres. They needn’t be ‘Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds but with…’ (Plunkbuts, as I’m sure you already know ’em). Robocraft doing battle royale with weird warbots is pretty decent and certainly different, and now battle royale is meeting class-based fantasy action in Paladins‘ Battlegrounds mode. Yes, that name is gobsmackingly cheeky. But while the name is a rip-off, the game might offer something different. We can see for ourselves now, as Hi-Rez Studios today launched Paladins Battlegrounds into public alpha testing and it’s free to play. You already know the basics: 100 players drop into a big level, search for loot (in this case, power-up cards giving perks improving abilities and whatnot), and try to murder each other to pieces while a circle of blue death fog closes in to push players closer together … [Read more...] about Paladins Battlegrounds mode now battling royale in beta
Subscribers to the Paladins Reddit page have adopted an unusual method of protesting the game's loot boxes, with them filling up the subreddit with hilariously terrible fan art. The fan art has emerged as a result of Paladins developer Hi-Rez Studios' loot box-esque card system, with it being criticized for being "pay to win" as a result of improving character abilities. The system has been compared to EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2, with it offering tiered boosts to abilities that make characters more powerful after they're unlocked. While the Battlefront 2 subreddit expressed its frustration more directly, publicly calling out EA and admonishing the game for its microtransactions, Paladins players have opted to take a more light-hearted approach to the controversy. The subreddit is now littered with crude illustrations of Paladins' heroes, some of which you can view in the gallery below: Begin slideshow Though it's unclear exactly when this trend of … [Read more...] about Paladins Reddit Protests Against Loot Boxes with Terrible “Fan Art”
Over the weekend, Hi-Rez Expo 2018 gave us a ton of news about the future of the developer’s many IPs like Paladins: Champions of the Realm and SMITE. Both directors talk a lot about the thought process they have when creating the sounds and theme for each of the unique characters that appear in their games. You can check out the video for yourself down below. There has been a ton of news that has come out of Hi-Rez Expo all throughout the weekend as well. Hi-Rez Expo 2018 has been a hot-bed for both SMITE and Paladins: Champions of the Realm news, and that continues into the last day of the event. In a brand new video released earlier today, developer Hi-Rez Studios delves further into the background and characters in a way untouched in the series before. In the video (seen below) we hear a lot more about the actual origin story that rests in the backdrop of Paladins: Champions of the Realm. The story tells one of a group of heroes that brought about a golden age after decades of strife, dragons, and village-burning. Known as the “Paladins,” the group would disband after peace took hold of the world. However, that peace changed quickly with the uncovering of crystals that brought a new age of power to be harnassed, utilized, and abused in the wrong hands. Crystal use were banished to create stability among the kingdom… but not everyone was on board. Some of these Paladins saw this as a way for … [Read more...] about Paladins Expands Lore with New Cinematic Video at Hi-Rez Expo 2018
