CRIMINALS are targeting teenagers on apps like Instagram and Snapchat for money laundering, a new report reveals. These online "money mules" are used to clean up dirty money – and are being hooked in by tempting and widespread social media posts. Scammers offer Instagram and Snapchat users "instant cash" if they hand over bank details. And while cash will inevitably flow through the bank account of a "mule", they'll end up with nothing to show for it – and in some cases, face an investigation by authorities. An investigation by Sky News found that fraudsters are "operating with impunity" on popular social networks. And it revealed that under 25s are six times more likely to fall victim to fraudsters on social media than over 50s – which is why criminals target youngsters in particular. PAYPAL users are being warned of a new email scam that installs a computer-crippling virus on your Windows PC. The inbox message pretends to come from "[email protected]" with the subject "PayPal account warning" and a Microsoft Word doc attachment that covertly plants the malicious software (malware) on your desktop. But it's actually from “[email protected]”, which is a "look-a-like", typo-riddled website domain designed to trick and confuse victims, according to My Online Security. "Greetings, dear Client! We noticed a lot of frauds performed by machinations with online services of the accounts of our clients," reads the fraudulent email. HACKERS can control popular voice assistants like Alexa and Siri to steal money from your bank account and unlock smart locks to enter your home. Researchers have discovered a bug in Amazon, Apple and Google's bots that can be triggered with 'silent' commands hidden in music, reports The New York Times. These subliminal messages are undetectable to the human ear and could be used to buy things on Amazon and elsewhere online using your payment details. Smart speakers are quickly becoming one of the must-have home gadgets, with almost half of UK households expected to own such a device by 2022 (up from 10 per cent today), according to consulting firm OC&C.
