When the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law trailer debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, fans got quite the shock with the reveal that Charlie Cox is reprising his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the series. This is incredibly exciting--especially when you consider the upcoming standalone series for the character on Disney+. However, Cox's portrayal of Daredevil so far has been decidedly serious and often dark. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law , on the other hand, is a half-hour sitcom about a lawyer who just happens to turn into a big, green rage monster. How, exactly, do those two pieces fit together? According to showrunner Jessica Gao, it wasn't as hard as you might think. "It's so fun to take these characters that you've only seen in these kinds of very serious dramatic roles and situations and [bring] them into our show where they get to kind of take a break from all that because in our show the universe isn't going to end," she told GameSpot. "It's slice of life. It's daily life. It's like a … [Read more...] about How She-Hulk Fits An Ultra-Serious Daredevil Into Its Comedic World

Here are the games joining and leaving PC Game Pass in August
Audio player loading… It looks like Death Stranding is coming to PC Game Pass. The addition hasn't been announced officially, but the PC Game Pass account (opens in new tab) on Twitter changed its avatar to an image of a Death Stranding vista and posted a tweet that says "sometimes we just like a good landscape picture." Oh you guys. There's some doubt in the tweet's replies as to whether the screenshot was from Death Stranding or another game, but then someone found the rock pictured in the PC Game Pass avatar and posted a screenshot (opens in new tab) of Norman Reedus pissing on it. So, yeah, I think Death Stranding is coming to PC Game Pass at some point. A related but superfluous thought: Last year, Microsoft renamed the PC version of Game Pass, which used to be called "Xbox Game Pass for PC." The old name was bad, but now I'm wondering if this scenario was a consideration, too. Game Pass has always offered certain games on PC only, but Death … [Read more...] about Here are the games joining and leaving PC Game Pass in August
Microsoft inclusive lead reveals there’s a ‘bit of a plateau’ in accessibility tech
Accessibility Week This feature is part of PC Gamer's Accessibility Week (opens in new tab) , running from August 16, where we're exploring accessible games, hardware, mods and more. I've been speaking to Bryce Johnson, Inclusive Lead at Microsoft Devices and co-inventor of the Xbox Adaptive Controller (XAC), about the process behind and reception of the accessible gaming device. And although he's happy about where the project ended up and where the accessibility industry is going as a whole, he's a little concerned about where things might go from here. The XAC is Microsoft's answer to making games more accessible for players with disabilities. That description makes it sound so simple, but making an accessible controller is definitely not straightforward, even with backing from a company whose net worth is about $1 trillion. Johnson explains that it was first important to recognise the limitations of current controller configurations. Without full fluid range of … [Read more...] about Microsoft inclusive lead reveals there’s a ‘bit of a plateau’ in accessibility tech
Dungeon Munchies is an RPG platformer where you’re a zombie, and worse, an unpaid intern
Sometimes, a whole game sprouts from a tiny seed of an idea. In the case of Dungeon Munchies, it's a simple, jokey premise: you're an unpaid zombie intern. A necromancer-chef named Simmer raises you as part of her plan to unleash a new generation of magical cuisine on the world. Why? How? You're not being paid enough to ask those questions, because you're not being paid at all. So off you go, searching the dungeon for ingredients. Don't worry about dying: endless, inescapable revival is part of your employee benefits package. This concept dovetails neatly into a mechanical foundation. You explore an (almost completely linear) side-scrolling world, marching along, avoiding traps and fighting monsters. Then you harvest ingredients from those monsters and cook magical dishes that visibly mutate your body, Binding of Isaac-style. That would be a fine little game by itself—maybe some sort of roguelite. But that's not what we've got here. During the three years Dungeon Munchies spent … [Read more...] about Dungeon Munchies is an RPG platformer where you’re a zombie, and worse, an unpaid intern
Dead Island 2 is alive and coming in February
Audio player loading… Nine years after its initial reveal, Dead Island 2 will release on February 3, according to a listing for the PS4 version on Amazon. That's naturally subject to change and could just be placeholder—this being Dead Island 2, I wouldn't be surprised—but it does line up with recent hints by Embracer Group's CEO that the open world zombie game will be released in the company's 2023 fiscal year. The Amazon listing (opens in new tab) reiterates some of the points we've known about the game during its long stint in development hell. It's set in a version of Los Angeles "stained with horror", which means you'll get to bludgeon zombies in "the verdant suburbia of Beverly Hills" and "the quirky promenade of Venice Beach". Combat is "visceral and gory", naturally, and there will be "dozens" of different kinds of zombie to eviscerate, all with an LA theme, of course. It's been confirmed since 2014 that Dead Island 2 will have at least four playable … [Read more...] about Dead Island 2 is alive and coming in February
Where others failed, this mod finally adds a 3rd dimension to Doom’s enemies
Audio player loading… Voxel Doom, a graphics mod for the original Doom that turns the game's various sprites into full-on 3D voxel models, released its 1.0 version (opens in new tab) today. Made by a modder named Cheello (opens in new tab) , the mod affects everything from the game's legioned demons to its ammo pick-ups, adding a sense of depth and—get this—letting you view its once-obstinately flat 2D sprites from different angles. Angles! We've been keeping our eye on Voxel Doom (opens in new tab) here at PCG for a while now, but the Doom modding community has been talking about the idea for even longer. The problem was about both artistic capability and technical capacity: any project that was going to try replacing Doom's sprites would need to walk a tightrope over the uncanny valley, making sure that the models it created weren't incongruous with Doom's much-beloved art style. Voxel modelling—a technique that uses 3D cubes instead of traditional 2D … [Read more...] about Where others failed, this mod finally adds a 3rd dimension to Doom’s enemies
Here’s classic Doom with ray tracing
Audio player loading… I know we're all well past the part where ray tracing any given game is startling and cool (opens in new tab) , but every time I see a new game ray traced I can't help but be startled and say "that's cool." Sorry, I think I'm just built this way. Anyway, modder sultim_t has taken the classic Doom and added ray tracing. So you, yes you, can now enjoy one of the great shooters but with flashy lighting. Using the PrBoom sourceport, sultim_t added the dynamic lighting system to Doom's first three chapters. Since Doom is open source and all, it's free, and you can download it for free and play it with pretty minimal technical knowhow. Let's just ray trace everything at this point. I mean, why not, right? Old games? Ray trace it. Your phone interface? Ray traced. Refrigerator panel? Ray traced. Dog? Ray trace. You can find PrBoom: Ray Traced on sultim-t's github. (opens in new tab) … [Read more...] about Here’s classic Doom with ray tracing
Humankind’s cities can now be turned into gargantuan cakes
Audio player loading… Humankind is celebrating its first anniversary by giving out hats and turning cities into giant cakes. This sounds like something Lex Luthor would do on his birthday, but who am I to judge? I just drink too much and cry about the inevitability of death. These hats can be stuck on your custom avatar, and there are new hairstyles to choose from as well. More impressive is the project that allows you to turn your cities into giant celebratory treats. Would Carthage look better as a cake? That's up to historians to decide. Old in-game events are also returning, so it's a good time to hop in and see what you've missed. By completing them, you can earn rewards like new avatars and player icons. And if you've played through them already, there's also something new: the 100 Years War scenario, where you'll fight the English as the Franks on a map of France. Humankind has also released a couple of culture DLCs since we last checked in, adding a variety … [Read more...] about Humankind’s cities can now be turned into gargantuan cakes

Try out the Cold War tactics of Regiments in its free playtest
Audio player loading… How about a big fat single player campaign RTS about your classic cold war Germany conflict scenario? Regiments (opens in new tab) is going to be just that when it releases in 2022, with a dynamic campaign about wide-scale warfare in the East-West German border region in 1989. It's a pretty large scale game, intended to let you control platoons rather than individual squads or units, putting you in the role of commanding officer rather than lieutenant or sergeant. Right now, Regiments is running a beta playtest of its larger-scale Operations mode. Operations are multi-day, large region conflicts where changes to the battlefield and losses are persistent over that time. As the battle advances you'll have to use points to replenish your forces or draw in reinforcements. It's a neat idea, and I like that the wreckage of damaged vehicles or the defensive emplacements you've put up will last between days. Well-placed fighting positions or tank traps … [Read more...] about Try out the Cold War tactics of Regiments in its free playtest
