Ukrainian refugee finally plays Elden Ring after funding a new PC with VTuber models
Audio player loading… The day before Elden Ring's release, Nikita fled his country. Early in the morning on February 24, an airfield in his home city of Bucha, Ukraine was bombed by Russian forces. Within days, Russia had broken into the city, ransacked homes, and massacred over a thousand people (opens in new tab) , according to reporting by the BBC and other outlets covering the war. "We woke up in the morning and heard explosions. They killed a lot of people on the streets that were trying to find food," Nikita says. "People were trapped in the city for about two to three weeks without food, water and electricity. They eventually got evacuated, but it was horrible and a lot of them suffer from PTSD now." Nikita, 21, and his four family members escaped Bucha (which is about 30 km west of the capital city of Kyiv) by car and drove for the Polish border on the first day of the attack. They took alternative roads to avoid running into Russian forces. "I almost … [Read more...] about Ukrainian refugee finally plays Elden Ring after funding a new PC with VTuber models
Nightdive sheds light on why Blade Runner Enhanced Edition was such a disaster
Audio player loading… I was heartbroken by the state that Nightdive's Blade Runner Enhanced Edition released in (opens in new tab) . As someone with long, fond memories of sitting at my dad's enormous grey Fujitsu PC and running around the original's rain-slick LA streets, I was excited for the surefire nostalgia hit that I thought Nightdive's remaster would be. Well, the rest is history. The smudgy upscaling, unnatural framerate, and a litany of new bugs combined to make sure the remaster turned out a worse experience than the original. Those of us who were looking forward to stepping into Ray McCoy's gumshoes were sorely disappointed. But at least now we know why. A new interview from PCGamesN (opens in new tab) with Nightdive's Larry Kuperman and Dimitris Giannakis—the company's director of business development and lead producer on Blade Runner Enhanced Edition, respectively—sheds some light on the "perfect storm" the project faced before it was released. … [Read more...] about Nightdive sheds light on why Blade Runner Enhanced Edition was such a disaster
Turtle Beach is in a race to find a buyer or else risk total upheaval
Audio player loading… Like Penelope when Odysseus went on his epic jaunt around Greece, Turtle Beach has been talking to hundreds of potential suitors, in the hopes of a match. Essentially, the peripheral company wants someone to buy it, to save it from itself. However, its search for love is not going well. There's a lot to digest there, but here goes. The peripheral company best known for its cheap console headsets, simulator gear, and controllers (and owner of PC-focused brand Roccat) has been going through a period of upheaval. One that could see some of its upper management out of a job and the company's future in the hands of another in just a few months' time. It's all rather scandalous, actually. To understand what's going on with Turtle Beach and why it's looking for a sale in the first place, you need to go back a few months to a potential buyout bid from hedge fund and part owner, Donerail. Aggressive boardroom antics The Donerail Group (opens in … [Read more...] about Turtle Beach is in a race to find a buyer or else risk total upheaval
GTA 6 Will Set “New Creative Benchmarks” For All Entertainment, Take-Two Says
Take-Two, the owner of Rockstar Games, has commented briefly on GTA 6. As part of Take-Two's latest earnings briefing , CEO Strauss Zelnick said development on GTA 6--or whatever the next entry in the series is called--is "well underway." This is the same exact wording that Rockstar itself used when announcing GTA 6 back in February of this year. Zelnick went on to say that the development team at Rockstar Games is trying to make GTA 6 be another standout success in the series and across the wider entertainment sector. "Rockstar Games team is determined to once again set creative benchmarks for the series, our industry, and for all entertainment, just as the label has done with every one of their frontline releases," Zelnick said. Very little is known about GTA 6, but rumor has it that the game will feature two lead characters, one of whom is a Latina woman . The game is rumored to take place in Vice City on a map that will continuously expand over time. The game is said to … [Read more...] about GTA 6 Will Set “New Creative Benchmarks” For All Entertainment, Take-Two Says
Destiny 2 fans jump on leak as evidence that a new ‘poison’ subclass coming
Audio player loading… Be prepared to take this with a sizable pinch of whatever passes for salt in the Destiny 2 universe, but it appears an artist at Bungie may have inadvertently given a glimpse of the game's next subclass. The leak came in the form of a clip allegedly posted to an Artstation account, as first reported by DestinyTwoLeaks on Twitter. I can't confirm the provenance because the linked post has been pulled, but—this being the internet—the clip is still easy enough to find. I've embedded it at the top. At first glance, it just shows a Titan performing the 'Swing of the Scythe' finisher, which is available as part of the current season pass. However, cast your eyes down to the bottom left and things get more interesting. The HUD elements are all green, which doesn't tally with any current subclass in the game. Most intriguing, the super icon (ie your ult) is also new. Finally, the character has three melee charges available, which isn't possible with any … [Read more...] about Destiny 2 fans jump on leak as evidence that a new ‘poison’ subclass coming
Researchers find way to shrink a VR headset down to normal glasses size
Audio player loading… Researchers from Stanford University and Nvidia have teamed up to help develop VR glasses that look a lot more like regular spectacles. Okay, they are rather silly looking due to the ribbons extended from either eye, but they're much, much flatter and compact than your usual goggle-like virtual reality headsets today. "A major barrier to widespread adoption of VR technology, however, is the bulky form factor of existing VR displays and the discomfort associated with that," the research paper published at Siggraph 2022 (opens in new tab) says. These aptly named "Holographic Glasses" can deliver a full-colour 3D holographic image using optics that are only 2.5mm thick. Compared to the traditional way a VR headset works, in which a lens magnifies a smaller display some distance away from it, shrinking all the prerequisite parts down to such a small size is quite the spectacular step forward for VR. The Holographic Glasses prototype uses … [Read more...] about Researchers find way to shrink a VR headset down to normal glasses size
Subnautica studio will reveal its new sci-fi strategy game at Gamescom
Audio player loading… In February, Krafton announced that Subnautica studio Unknown Worlds, which it had acquired in October 2021, was working on a new project that was not Subnautica 3. Instead, it's a " turn-based strategy game (opens in new tab) set in a sci-fi world"—quite a departure from the first-person survival games that put Unknown Worlds on the map. Later this month at Gamescom, we'll finally get a look at what it's all about: Unknown Worlds co-founder Charlie Cleveland will formally unveil the new game during the Opening Night Live showcase. The presence of Unknown Worlds' new thing was initially revealed on Twitter by Master of All Gaming Ceremonies Geoff Keighley, but the tweet contained an extremely unfortunate spelling error (opens in new tab) that led to a completely different (and very not safe-for-work) Twitter account. Fortunately, Krafton also confirmed the Gamescom appearance of Unknown Worlds in a separate statement of its own, saying that … [Read more...] about Subnautica studio will reveal its new sci-fi strategy game at Gamescom
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now the highest-grossing videogame movie ever in the US
Audio player loading… Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now the highest-grossing domestic videogame movie ever made—making $147 million in the US to just tip the $146 million of the original. The domestic qualifier is necessary because, while the blue blur's sequel has made $287.8 million globally ( thanks, Deadline (opens in new tab) ), that's still some way off World of Warcraft's $439 million haul. The film sees Sonic and Tails looking for the Master Emerald, with Idris Elba's Knuckles and Jim Carrey's Dr Robotnik in hot pursuit. Interestingly enough the film's release coincided with Carrey announcing his intention to retire from acting—Sonic 3 was confirmed by distributor Paramount in February, so with these kinds of numbers Carrey's resolve shall doubtless be tested with an extremely large cheque. Ben Schwartz, Sonic's voice actor in the movies, tweeted to celebrate the numbers exceeding the first movie: #SonicMovie2 has officially passed the domestic box office … [Read more...] about Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now the highest-grossing videogame movie ever in the US
