close Video Nintendo offering $20k bounty if you can hack a Switch Tech Take: RedTeam Security's Kurt Muhl on Nintendo's offer of up to $20k to hackers in return for information regarding Switch hardware security vulnerabilities The Nintendo Switch has been available to buy for a little over a year now, and unfortunately for Nintendo, the hybrid console just got hacked. This is no ordinary hack, though, it's one that can't be patched using software alone. In order to render the hack useless, Nintendo and Nvidia need to redesign the Tegra X1 processor at the heart of the Switch. As Eurogamer reports, the exploit comes via well-known console hackers fail0verflow and is called ShofEL2. The vulnerability was disclosed to Nvidia, Nintendo, and Google (due to the Tegra chip's use in Android devices) a while ago, but now a public release has happened simply because so many people are already aware of the vulnerability. In the video below, you can see Linux running on an … [Read more...] about Latest Nintendo Switch hack can’t be patched

Nintendo Switch hack: “all Switch units in existence today are vulnerable, forever”
The Nintendo Switch hardware has been hacked and cannot be patched by the manufacturer.Fusee Gelee hack fully documented online. The system is now open to homebrew software, with a fully-supported touch version of Linux available. A report by Digital Foundry reckons the exploit “cannot be patched”. Nintendo’s only option, it says, is to “revise the Nvidia Tegra X1 processor itself, patching out the boot ROM bug.” Here’s a video of Linux on Switch with some horrible music: “Choosing whether to release an exploit or not is a difficult choice,” said fail0verflow in a blog post. “Given our experiences with past consoles, we’ve been wary of releasing vulnerability details or exploits for fear of them being used primarily for piracy rather than homebrew.” “90 days ago, we begun the responsible disclosure process with Google, as Tegra chips are often used in Android devices. The disclosure deadline has now lapsed. The … [Read more...] about Nintendo Switch hack: “all Switch units in existence today are vulnerable, forever”

New Nintendo Switch Model Hinted at in Update
Earlier this week, Nintendo Switch firmware 5.0 was released. The latest update to the console’s operating system introduced several new features and updates including a fix for the Switch playtime deletion issue and the introduction of two dozen new user icons including icons based on games like ARMS. But that’s not all that people have discovered in the update. The Nintendo Switch hacking and development community has begun to dig into the code of the new firmware and they have made an interesting discovery. On SwitchBrew, a community-run Wikipedia page based on Switch homebrew development, it has been noted that in firmware 5.0, a new folder “a” was added, in addition to the existing “nx” folder, containing a separate “bct” and “package1.” Both of these seem encrypted/meant for the new “Mariko” hardware that support was added for.” Firmware 5.0 also adds a configuration for the T214 (Tegra 214) … [Read more...] about New Nintendo Switch Model Hinted at in Update
