The Strong Museum, a museum in New York City that has a number of different sections dedicated to play, has added in four new Video Game Hall of Fame entries from a variety of different genres. The games are Final Fantasy 7, John Madden Football, Spacewar, and the original Tomb Raider. These four games have either given rise to juggernaut franchises or become particularly well-known as classics, so each one being put in the Hall of Fame has earned their position. Final Fantasy 7 is seen as one of the best Final Fantasy games, with a wide cast of characters and one of the most memorable antagonists in video games. John Madden’s Football has evolved into a titan of a yearly franchise release, as each Madden game only gets better and better both in terms of looks and evolving gameplay. While Tomb Raider hasn’t had as many games as Madden NFL or Final Fantasy, Lara Croft has still become one of the best-known female video game protagonists, and indeed served as one of the … [Read more...] about Strong Museum Adds Four New Video Game Hall Of Fame Entries
Viz Media’s made a name for itself through anime and manga publishing, but withThe World Next Door, the first title to launch under its new video game imprint, it looks like the company has a good chance at breaking into yet another field. Because from what I played of the combination action-puzzle-visual novel during this year’s Game Developers Conference, developer Rose City Games has something endearingly unexpected on its hands. This story plays out as a series of long, voiceless visual novel sequences, where Jun and the fantasy world teens who have adopted her hash out a plan … [Read more...] about Viz Media’s first video game is like fantasy anime meets Tetris

Lawmakers in Hawaii have put forth a pair of bills that, if enacted, would limit the sale of video games with "gambling mechanisms" to minors and require that loot box odds be disclosed. The bills were introduced into Hawaii's legislature recently by Democrat Chris Lee, who you may remember was the politician who called out Star Wars: Battlefront II for being "predatory."The first bill is HB2686. It states that video game publishers have recently begun to use "predatory mechanisms" in their games that are "designed to exploit human psychology to compel players to keep spending money in the same way casino games are designed." It goes on to say that things like loot boxes--which are popular and prevalent in games today--are similar to slot machines because they let users pay money for a chance at winning something."One common variety of this type of predatory mechanism, known as a loot box, can present the same psychology, addictive, and financial risks as gambling," reads a line from … [Read more...] about If This New Video Game Loot Box Bill Becomes Law, It Could Shake Up The Industry
