Will Stadia work? Right now, I can't tell you. Google's game streaming service, revealed at the Game Developers' Conference this week, has the infrastructure might and engineering genius of the world's biggest tech company behind it. Early tests of the service and of last year's Project Stream prototype are encouraging; Google says it will be able to lower the 25-megabits-per-second connection requirement for Project Stream by the time of Stadia's launch later this year. That brings it within reach of the average UK home broadband connection - in theory. But until it's available at scale in the real world, in real households, with real internet usage patterns, we won't really know. Will Stadia succeed? This, too, is impossible to answer on the information we have. We don't know how it will be priced or indeed what the business model will be. (Subscription, like Netflix? Purchase, like iTunes? Will there be any upfront cost beyond the controller - if you even need that?) Even more … [Read more...] about Stadia offers a thrilling new vision, but are Google and gaming ready for each other?
New frontier data
The second chapter of Elite Dangerous: Beyond will release at the end of June. An announcement from Frontier released today revealed that commanders will have access to the new content from June 28. Beyond Chapter 2 is the first of two small mid-season updates, which will be followed up by a major update in the autumn. Once it launches, you’ll get access to a whole bunch of new missions, adding to the wing missions introduced in chapter one, with settlements to explore as the ever-present Thargoid threat continues to grow. There’ll also be a new Chieftain variant, the Alliance Challenger, which operates as a frontline vessel capable of soaking up plenty of damage. Elite Dangerous is definitely worthy of a spot on our list of the best space games, but there are some other great ways to explore the stars on there too. The update also includes new installation interactions, allowing commanders to scan and interact with Space Installations. You can disable outer turrets, source … [Read more...] about The Thargoids get new ships in Elite Dangerous: Beyond Chapter 2
There are over thirty flyable ships in Elite, and every one has a distinct personality. These craft are the real stars of the game, and the thing every commander aspires to—whether they’re an explorer, trader, bounty hunter, or pirate. But how are they built? It’s something that has always intrigued me, how an idea makes it from someone’s mind to a spaceship that can be flown in-game. So I asked Frontier how it does it, focusing on the latest ship to be added to its growing space garage: the mighty Chieftain.“The Thargoids have returned,” says Sandro Sammarco, lead designer of Elite Dangerous, referring to the mysterious aliens that have been tormenting pilots across the galaxy. “And their arrival has inspired the Alliance to build a war fleet, including a new ship called the Chieftain.” This combat-focused ship is manufactured by Lakon, most famous for its Type-9 freighter. It shares some design elements with that ship, but is a very … [Read more...] about From rough sketch to final model, here’s how Frontier designs the ships of Elite Dangerous
Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter One, the first part of the third season of Frontier Development's sci-fi space sim, will go live on February 27. The studio said that Beyond, which will be free for all players, will focus primarily on "community-requested enhancements" to the game, including improvements to criminal behavior reactivity that will make the galaxy "fairer and more competitive" for everyone. Crime-and-punishment changes include a new Advance Tactical Response unit that will pursue repeat offenders, a "hot ships" feature that will associate crimes with a player's ships, and increased consequences for bad behavior enables through new notoriety levels. Pilots will also have access to a new, in-the-cockpit source of news and updates through the GalNet Audio channel, which Frontier said will enable them to "engage with the overarching narrative without ever leaving the action." On the less flashy side of things, the update will incorporate a new trade data … [Read more...] about Elite Dangerous’s new season Beyond
The FCC is patting itself on the back for restoring progress in broadband deployment and essentially saving the internet. To prove it, the FCC released a report showing that "several companies, including AT&T, Verizon, Frontier, and Alaska Communications either commenced or announced new deployments in 2017," and that we should view those deployments as proof that further efforts will be made. And it's all because the FCC overturned net neutrality rules that were put in place under the previous administration. "Based on the Commission’s actions to accelerate deployment in 2017, the report concludes that the Commission is now encouraging broadband deployment on a reasonable and timely basis," the FCC stated in a press release (PDF). The FCC concedes that far too many Americans still lack access to high-speed internet, and it will continue to encourage deployment of broadband to more areas, including rural sections. Combined with the actual report (PDF), it all sounds like a … [Read more...] about FCC report uses old data to ‘prove’ net neutrality repeal saved the internet
