The League of Legends community is lashing out against a PAX West panel held by Riot Games that included a period meant exclusively for women and non-binary participants. The discussion took place over Reddit and Twitter and engulfed discussion forums over the Labor Day weekend, with the tension continuing into the week. Riot had a multi-day presence at PAX West, including a two-day viewing party for the NA LCS semi-final matches. On Aug. 31, in room 613, according to the event’s official description, Riot hosted “a variety of sessions to support women and non-binary folks who are interested in getting into games professionally,” with presentations given by women from Riot. The day began with one-on-one resume reviews and feedback, and continued into game design discussions. When League of Legends fans saw the exclusive sessions and review block, they began to ask questions on social media. There was a big uproar when League of Legends announced that its North American league would take on franchising for size. It was accepted at the time that franchising was good for the sport. While it was a step away from LoL‘s previous meritocracy model, which allowed teams to rise and fall out of their leagues based on performance, it seemed like the forward-looking thing to do. Have any of the issues with competitive LoL been addressed? We don’t think so. League of Legends Franchising: What It Was Meant to Do Franchising was sold as a type of cure. The quarterfinal round of the North American LCS Spring Split Playoffs are in the book and they were just about as crazy as we anticipated. Saturday’s matchup between Team Liquid and Cloud9 was short-lived as Doublelift and company defeated Cloud9 in three straight games. Despite winning three in a row, the matches themselves were anything but easy as Cloud9 looked to be nearing victory more than once, only for things to quickly turn back in Team Liquid’s favor. This matchup just seemed to be a simple case of Team Liquid getting hot at the right time while Cloud9 couldn’t climb out of its recent losing skid. Cloud9’s season ended with them losing eight of their final eleven games. Sunday’s showdown between Team SoloMid and Clutch Gaming, on the other hand, subverted everyone’s expectations. TSM came into this matchup as heavy favorites, as they had seemed to finally hit their stride during the final few weeks of the regular season. After coming … [Read more...] about Clutch Gaming and Team Liquid Advance in League of Legends NA LCS 2018 Spring Playoffs
