Next week, pirates across the world will be raising anchor and swinging swords as part of a two-day Sea of Thieves-focussed Twitch Rivals event - and to encourage a few more eyes on the action, Rare is giving away the exceedingly fancy new Obsidian ship livery to those that tune in.Twitch Rivals' Sea of Thieves Showdown event runs from Tuesday, 23rd July to Wednesday, 24th July and will consist of four contests, with participants all battling to secure the $100,000 USD prize. Meanwhile, the new Obsidian ship livery (which you can admire in the video below), can be obtained by watching one complete match of Sea of Thieves' competitive Arena mode per day - which isn't too much of an ask given that a round of Arena lasts 24 minutes. Those that successfully watch a complete Arena match (or, at the very least, have it on in the background) on 23rd July will receive the Obsidian Figurehead and Obsidian Hull, and can complete the set with the Obsidian Sail and Obsidian Flag by watching a match … [Read more...] about Get Sea of Thieves’ fancy new Obsidian ship livery by watching Twitch next week

Shadow of War developer discusses the game’s controversial loot boxes
Last month, big budget Lord of the Rings game Middle-earth: Shadow of War revealed it would supplement its full-fat price-tag by including loot boxes purchasable with real-world money. It was an announcement which, predictably, did not go down well with fans. The single-player action adventure has an in-game store, called the Market, that sells orcs and other items for use in the game's Nemesis System. You can also buy loot chests, war chests, XP boosts and bundles. The loot chests contain gear (weapons and armour) of varying rarity. They can also contain XP boosts which, as you'd expect, help level up playable character Talion faster. War chests provide orc followers of varying rarity which you can use to help create a strong army. They can also contain training orders to level up and customise orc followers.Publisher Warner Bros. accompanied the announcement with reassurances - that anything gained from the loot boxes could also be earned by simply playing the game, that the … [Read more...] about Shadow of War developer discusses the game’s controversial loot boxes
Destiny 2 has a microtransaction problem
I'm nearing the end of Destiny 2's campaign and must say I'm enjoying it a lot. But there's one aspect of Bungie's ultra-hyped shared-world shooter that has gone down like a lead balloon: microtransactions. Destiny 1 has plenty of microtransactions via the in-game shop, dubbed the Eververse Trading Company. You're able to buy a raft of in-game items, such as emotes, exotic ornaments and even sparrows. Destiny 2, however, crosses the micro-transaction line in a number of areas - and the Destiny community is not happy. A cursory glance at the Destiny reddit, which has over 350,000 subscribers, reveals a change to the way shaders work has sparked outrage among the community. In Destiny 1, once you found a shader you could apply it to your gear to your heart's content. It was great because you could change your look as often as you'd change your mood. I fancy Cicero for Crucible, Chatterwhite for our Vault of Glass run - that sort of thing. In Destiny 2 shaders are consumables, which means … [Read more...] about Destiny 2 has a microtransaction problem
Crisis on Infinite Earths Comic Book Tie-In Kills a Major Arrowverse Character
By Russ Burlingame - December 15, 2019 10:00 am EST Share 0 Comments 0 The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" is on hiatus for almost another month, but that doesn't mean fans don't have anything to fill the universe-annihiliating hole in their lives. Today, Walmart stores in the U.S. finally got the Crisis on Infinite Earths 100-Page Giant #1 -- and to the surprise of everyone reading it, there is actually what appears to be a major Arrowverse death which takes place within its pages. That's important, since the comic is at least theoretically canonical to the Arrowverse TV shows. There is also a character -- The Ray, from Earth-X -- who was seemingly killed on TV, who we learn was saved from annihilation at the last moment so that he can take part in The Monitor's plan to save the multiverse. In case you couldn't tell by the headline and first paragraph, this is going to be a pretty spoiler-filled breakdown of a key plot element in Crisis on Infinite Earths … [Read more...] about Crisis on Infinite Earths Comic Book Tie-In Kills a Major Arrowverse Character
The Witcher 3 outgrossed some of 2017’s biggest games because it’s just that good
2017 was a hard year for some high-profile singleplayer games, and there was more than a little hand-wringing that the genre as we know it might be dying, replaced by 'games as a service.' We argued that in fact they're not dying, just changing, but it's easy to look at Steam's highest earning games of 2017 and spot the commonalities. Free to play mechanics, skins and loot boxes and crates and keys, all play a major part in 'living' games like Rainbow Six: Siege,Warframe,PUBG and Dota 2. And then there's The Witcher 3, which doesn't have any of that shit. And it's still raking in the dough. The Witcher 3 was released on May 19, 2015, almost four years to the day after The Witcher 2 first hit PC. By the end of summer, it had sold more than six million copies across PC and consoles. That was only a little surprising, because The Witcher 3 is an incredible game—it was good enough, and big enough, to lure in players who'd never touched the series before. A year later, CD Projekt put … [Read more...] about The Witcher 3 outgrossed some of 2017’s biggest games because it’s just that good
