This month, I tried to upgrade my home theater setup with an LG C1 OLED television and an HDMI 2.1 receiver. Tried . In doing so, I discovered what a nightmare HDMI 2.1's definition of "compatibility" is. When HDMI arrived on the scene almost 20 years ago, it seemed like a godsend: Instead of having to plug in five cables to get a 480p image with stereo audio, you could just plug in one cable. It was universal, had a directional configuration to make sure you couldn't plug it in upside down, and it just worked. Two decades later, though, HDMI is alive and well but has somehow become needlessly confusing. Instead of a simple spec with complex cables, we're now saddled with one simple cable and a truly baffling set of specs. Listen ye to my cautionary tale and beware the dark woods of HDMI. What is HDMI 2.1? HDMI 2.1 is the latest version of the High-Definition Multimedia Interface connector first unveiled in 2002. The initial HDMI 2.1 spec represented a big jump forward for the … [Read more...] about HDMI Used To Simplify Our Home Theaters, Now It’s Adding Confusion

New Predator Prequel Prey Teaser Drops Before August 5 Hulu Release
20th Century Studios has dropped a new teaser trailer for the upcoming movie Prey, a Predator movie sequel continuing the long-running survival-action franchise. The movie comes exclusively to Hulu on August 5. The new clip clocks in at just under 45 seconds, but clearly shows the fifth installment in the franchise will be more in the style of the horror vibes of the 1987 original and now taking cues from Shane Black's 2018 comedy take on the lore. A synopsis reads: "Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries." Netflix To Workers: Quit If You Don’t Want To Work On Content You Disagree With
Netflix has updated its culture guidelines to inform prospective workers that they might be asked to work on content they don't agree with or they perceive to be "harmful." If that's upsetting, there are other jobs out there, Netflix said. For the first time since 2017 ( via Insider ), Netflix updated its culture guidelines with a section pertaining to "Artistic Expression." The company says it supports artistic expression of all types and it allows its audience to choose what it wants to watch. As for employees, they might be asked to work on content they might find "harmful," and if that's the case, they might want to look elsewhere for employment. "Not everyone will like--or agree with--everything on our service," Netflix said. "While every title is different, we approach them based on the same set of principles: we support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with; we program for a diversity of audiences and tastes; and we let viewers decide what’s … [Read more...] about Netflix To Workers: Quit If You Don’t Want To Work On Content You Disagree With
Multiple Silent Hill Projects Are Rumored To Be In Development
Silent Hill rumors continue to swirl. Following last week's leaked Silent Hill art , journalist Jeff Grub and leaker NateTheHate2 took to Twitter to comment on two pieces of information they've heard from sources. The first is that Konami is likely working on multiple Silent Hill Games--including a mainline title and side "stories." The second allegedly confirms Bloober Team's involvement in a Silent Hill title--Silent Hill 2 Remake. The remake will receive reworked puzzles, new endings, and could possibly be a timed PlayStation exclusive. This is the stuff I've heard, and it comes from multiple different sources. Not all of my sources are primary, but everything is mostly lining up. To me, the biggest indicator is the stuff I've seen lines up with Konami doing a big reveal at E3 last year before it pulled out. https://t.co/GzUb3jzrwX — Jeff Grubb (@JeffGrubb) May 16, 2022 VGC also says that its sources support such claims. Bloober Team has long been rumored to … [Read more...] about Multiple Silent Hill Projects Are Rumored To Be In Development

Gears Of War Getting MCC-Style Collection – Report
Microsoft is developing a Halo: The Master Chief Collection-style compilation package themed around Gears of War, according to a new report. Nick Baker of Xbox Era revealed this on a podcast recently. "A while back I said there is another Microsoft franchise that's getting the Master Chief Collection-type treatment, I am of the belief that that is coming this year," Baker said ( via VGC ), adding that this will be Gears of War. The Master Chief Collection launched in 2014 on Xbox One, and it struggled mightily at launch with server issues and other problems. Developer 343 Industries has supported, grown, and evolved the game significantly since then, and it's now in great shape-- even outperforming Halo Infinite on Steam. The package contains all mainline Halo titles (including remastered versions of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2), full multiplayer support, Forge, Theater, and more. The game is available on Xbox Game Pass for all subscribers. It remains to be seen … [Read more...] about Gears Of War Getting MCC-Style Collection – Report
Netflix’s New Ad-Based Tier Could Launch As Early As October, Report Says
Netflix has said it might introduce a less-expensive, ad-based option in the future , and it could arrive sooner than expected. Netflix management said in a recent note to employees obtained by The New York Times that the new ad-based tier could launch by the end of 2022, which is earlier than the company apparently planned. Specifically, Netflix management said the ad-based tier may launch in the final three months of 2022, so sometime in the October-December window. At around the same time, Netflix will ramp up efforts to stop password-sharing, a mission the company has been on for some time already. Whether or not Netflix launches the ad-based tier in all markets all at once or if it's rolled out in waves remains to be seen. For years, Netflix said it would not introduce an ad-based model, but the company announced a new way of thinking earlier this year after losing 200,000 subscribers . Netflix projects it will lose 2 million more subscribers in the months ahead . This … [Read more...] about Netflix’s New Ad-Based Tier Could Launch As Early As October, Report Says
Disney Dreamlight Valley Is More Than Animal Crossing In Mickey Mouse Ears
When Disney Dreamlight Valley was announced , I found its intersecting parts of Disney, the farm-life sim genre, and a free-to-play model to be exciting. With a fair in-game economy and gameplay that keep genre fans coming back, the Animal Crossing-like could have the potential to become a hit with players of all ages--but that microtransaction question loomed large. After spending an hour with the Gameloft development team and checking out a hands-off demo, I'm heartened to have seen a pay model without uncomfortable caveats, making me more confident Dreamlight Valley will be well populated by fans of the genre and brand alike. On the surface, Dreamlight Valley appears to be your typical farm-life sim--even its name seems determined to recall imagery of Stardew Valley, one of the genre's most beloved games. I arrived to my demo wanting to find out if this other valley could provide a similar mix of relaxing gameplay mechanics such as farming, mining, and socializing. It does … [Read more...] about Disney Dreamlight Valley Is More Than Animal Crossing In Mickey Mouse Ears
