In this new era of service games we have the likes of Fortnite, Overwatch, and Warframe showing us how seasons of content and expansions can add years to a game’s shelf life. But another way to do that is to build up an esports following around a game: it generates hype, creates interesting stories, and inspires players with new strategies. The journey to reach this point hasn’t been easy for the Rainbow Six Pro League. The earlier days of the Pro League were rough: awkward shoutcasting, intrusive bugs, poor spectating tools, and a meta that was still in its infancy. But it has slowly improved over time. The Pro League is now in its third year and debuting an entirely new format that confidently sets out what Ubisoft thinks Siege esports should look like. Rainbow Six Siege is one of the best multiplayer games on PC. The most drastic and exciting change to the Pro League is the new pick-and-ban phase that begins every match. Each team bans one attacker and one defender. This … [Read more...] about Rainbow Six Siege Pro League changes make it as fun to watch as it is to play
Update: We've added Alibi and Maestro, and juggled a few other operators based on balancing tweaks and how they sit in the current meta.Rainbow Six Siege invites you to play a distinct role in the attack or defense. You can be an annoying distraction, act as your team's scout, or anchor the bomb site. Part of enjoying the game is discovering which of these roles you're most comfortable in. Here's our recommendations for most players based on the current meta.ATTACKERSUniversally, always goodHibana or ThermiteSiege's maps are balanced in a way that you almost always have to open up a ceiling hatch or wall in order to cancel out an inherent defense of the objective room. Think of it this way: you're changing the layout of the map and forcing defenders to leave favorable camping positions, shifting the advantage. It's key.As Hibana or Thermite, the first thing you should do in a round (apart from dealing with any spawn-peeking assholes) is safely enter the interior and blow up the most … [Read more...] about Which Rainbow Six Siege operators are best?
Next month Rainbow Six Siege gets two new operators, the first of eight due as part of the Year Three Pass. The newcomers, Finka and Lion, have a few things in common. They're both attackers, they're both part of a new "CBRN" (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense) unit, both are 'middleweights' with two armor and two speed, and both of their special abilities are global (Ubisoft's descriptor), meaning that they affect the whole map upon activation. They also both rely on timing and coordination, and have the chance to be especially useful at lower skill levels. Here's a closer look at them based on my time playing Operation Chimera over the weekend in Montréal. FINKA Finka's a potentially powerful support. Her Adrenal Surge grants every living teammate 20 temporary HP for 20 seconds, and has three expendable charges. The HP can't stack, due to a cooldown on the ability, but it's a perfect buff for giving your whole team an edge in survivability before they … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about Rainbow Six Siege’s next two operators
Rainbow Six Siege developer Ubisoft has kicked off this year’s balance updates with the Operation White Noise mid-season patch. The update goes live today on Rainbow Six Siege’s test servers, bringing a host of balance changes and bug fixes, as is typical with mid-season patches. Some of these, like the Ela nerf, were communicated ahead of time. Ubisoft did not set a date for when patch 4.2 will hit live servers just yet. Starting off with Ela, her SMG’s magazine size has been lowered from 50 to 40 bullets. This was done partially to make her less desirable as a pick, since she’s very popular right now which is affecting the metagame. Ela is also getting another nerf, but that’s because concussion effects are getting reduced across the board. Both Ela, and Zofia will be affected by this. Concussion will no longer disable sprinting, but will still to cut movement and camera rotation speed. Concussed players will be able to recover in four seconds instead of … [Read more...] about Rainbow Six Siege Operation White Noise mid-season patch nerfs Ela, Ash, concussion effects
