Less than one month ago players in Eve Online gathered for what was billed as that game’s first “million dollar battle.” But while the community succeeded in bringing together the most players ever for a single engagement in the game’s nearly 15-year history, they also put a historic strain on the game’s infrastructure. When more than 6,000 players showed up to fight, both sides said that the game did not perform as anticipated. In the aftermath, developer CCP Games said it was committed to making improvements and, this week, some improvements began to roll out. Eve Online operates on a timer system. Certain structures within the game world are only vulnerable to attack during a certain window of opportunity. That allows players to mass their forces — other people with jobs and families and real-world commitments — in a timely fashion for the climactic engagement. One of the issues encountered during the so-called million-dollar battle, also … [Read more...] about Eve Online update could mean bigger booms in the next ‘million dollar battle’

Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games released a couple of new videos focusing on combat. The first video is the weekly episode of Around the Verse featuring weapon balancing both on foot and in space, but we also get to see other goodies, including the first iteration of character customization. The second video is the new episode of Reverse the Verse, in which Tech Designers John Crewe and Andy Nicholson talk all things ship balance and space combat experience. Both videos are certainly interesting, as they shed light on some of the deepest and trickiest aspects of game development. In other Star Citizen news, the crowdfunding total has passed another milestone and is now over 178 million dollars. To be more precise, it’s sitting at $178,194,460 at the moment of this writing. You can check out the full video below. Long story short: that million-dollar war...wasn't a million-dollar war. It was actually a $10,000 hiccup (someone on Imgur actually did the maths). For those of you who want tales of massive explosions and daring exploits by maverick pilots, you're going to want to look somewhere else. Despite a record 6,000 players fighting in the same star system, the Keepstar (a large Citadel) being attacked by The Imperium survived the onslaught and there was only about $10,000 of damage. Largely thanks to server issues. Because EVE Online players share a single universe, when a huge amount of them occupy the same space TiDi (Time Dilation) is kicked into effect. Basically, time has to be slowed down to cope with the massive amount of people all trying to execute their own commands simultaneously. One Redditor by the name of avree broke down what this meant for what was hyped as the most expensive battle in EVE Online history. But although time was slowed down for the attackers, the Keepstar … [Read more...] about That big million dollar EVE Online war happened… and only cost about $10,000. What happened?
Eve Online, the epic spacefaring MMO, is gearing up for a major engagement this evening. At least one user on Reddit is hyping it as a “$1,000,000 battle.” The Imperium, led by Alex “The Mittani” Gianturco’s Goonswarm Federation, is set to lay siege to a massive player-owned installation belonging to Pandemic Horde. The battle will take place in the 9-4R system, along the western edge of the game world. That’s gobbledygook for most people, I know, so let’s break that down a bit. Eve is unique among MMOs because all of its players connect to the same server. There’s no shards or parallel worlds to speak of. Eve is a singular experience, with thousands of players working together in the same virtual world. That means right now the area around 9-4R is an absolute mess. CCP game designer “Fozzie” announced on Twitter that more than 5,500 players were present, breaking the record for the most users logged in at a single system at … [Read more...] about Eve Online is gearing up for a ‘million dollar battle’
PC strategy title Eve Online is a sprawling, sophisticated MMO with a dynamic economy, living communities, and a political backdrop that could fill up a library’s worth of history books, but in the next 24 hours it stands to become the backdrop to a one million dollar battle, involving thousands of players and an even larger audience. The basic gist of EVE Online is this; players control ships, weapons, and resources (both material and human) in an ever evolving tug of war for control of a persistent galaxy first created by CCP Games 15 years ago. This has established a fertile ground for feuds, stalemates, and large scale wars, one of which made the news in 2013 for costing a total of $300,000 in terms of player expenditure. But how does that amount of money make it into a game like Eve Online? Well, players are able to purchase subscription time with cash, and sell that resource in-game for EVE Online’s own virtual currency, thus establishing a conversion rate that allows … [Read more...] about The next big EVE Online war is about to break out, and it could cost one million dollars… wait, what?!
