Update, Correction: It does appear that Steam players can play with and against XBox and Windows 10 owners of the game, which is nice. After seven months in early access to hammer it into ship-shape, RPG-turned-CCG Fable Fortune just about ready for launch. With an official release date of February 22nd, it’ll be rolling out on Microsoft consoles and PC as a free-to-play title, with existing early adopters getting a few perks with their Founders Pack purchase. Hearthstone probably isn’t shaking in its boots, but this one does at least look to be a reasonably polished looking take on the ‘light’ CCG genre, filling its playfield with chunky cardboard stand-ups after summoning, and buoyed somewhat by the whimsical, fairytale-with-knobs-on aesthetic of the Fable franchise. Every year before E3, we talk about the games we expect to see, along with the ones that we hope we’ll get to take another look at. These include the obvious ones, like big games announced at the previous year’s conference. But they’re also the hypothetical projects, the titles that we’ve neither seen nor heard from in years — perhaps since they were first announced. Some games have gone quiet much longer than others, though. We’ve gathered up some of the most notable “missing in action” games that we'd love to see make a grand reappearance at this year’s big show. The New York Yankees weren’t the first sports team to don pinstripes, but the distinctive pattern is as closely associated with the baseball club as it is with boardroom suits. The Yankees’ home uniform, a simple design featuring thin navy stripes on a white background, is an enduring classic: It has barely changed in more than a century. Basic though it is, the pinstriped design presents some challenges for the makers of baseball video games. In the kind of discussion that happens all the time at studios working on sports titles, the developers of R.B.I. When Richard Marks was in 10th grade, his father opened a video game store that was ahead of its time. It was the early ’80s; used game sales weren’t common, and the store — Video Exchange — ran on the gimmick that customers could trade in their games. The store didn’t last long. But for the young Marks, who held the title of chief demo officer, working there was like living in an arcade. Surrounded by open boxes, he played everything and recommended the best games to customers. Atari 2600 games. Intellivision games. Anything on a console. Four days from today, Nintendo's latest console will go on sale. A little over four years since the launch of Wii U, a little over four months since Nintendo announced Switch, and to many, the system seems like a breath of fresh air — a game console Transformer full of potential with a steady stream of software to back it up. To some, though, the system seems incomplete. From early reports of controllers that don't properly sync to a limited launch lineup, a lack of non-game apps like Netflix, a missing Virtual Console library and lingering questions about the online service, there's a simplicity to Switch's launch that recalls the '90s — Zelda is Mario 64, and if you don't want that or a few other games, you might not need the system right away.
