All rise! This court of DualShockers is now in session.Only a few days ago, we heard that developer No Matter Studios would be changing the name of their Kickstarted game from “Prey for the Gods” to Praey for the Gods. And while their new name is arguably way more interesting in concept and execution, the reason for the change is less savory. Namely, the looming threat of litigation from Bethesda Softworks and their parent company, ZeniMax Media (combined in this article as just “Bethesda”).Why does ZeniMax Media, a publishing giant that has its tendrils in such major studios like Bethesda (Fallout, The Elder Scrolls), id Software (Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein) and Arkane Studios (Dishonored), feel so threatened by this grassroots indie project? Their latest tentpole release – Prey – falls within the previous name “Prey for the Gods” and likely sounded too similar to their backup, stylized name “Præy for the Gods.” … [Read more...] about Lawyer Up: Can Bethesda Stop Developers From Using the Word “Prey”?

Microsoft has announced that their Office software, one of the top reasons for buying a Surface tablet, is coming to iPad. In fact, the apps for Word, Powerpoint, Excel and OneNote are all available for download right now on the App Store. The Office Suite has been available on Windows Phone and Windows Tablets for years now, but it remained unclear whether Microsoft was going to keep the software exclusive to their platforms or open it up to Apple and Google devices. After years of waiting we’ve finally got that answer.“Today, we unveiled Office for iPad – specifically Word, PowerPoint and Excel,” reads Microsoft’s statement. “But this isn’t simply Office on another device. We thought a lot about what people want to do when they’re on their tablet, iPad functionality, and touch-first when we were building Office for iPad. We reimagined Office on the iPad, while retaining what people love about Office. We hope you’ll be … [Read more...] about Microsoft Office Arrives on iPad
the App Store belongs to Apple, arguably the biggest driver of the term into common parlance. Does Apple own the phrase? It wants to, at least. It's seeking a trademark for the term "App Store" with the U.S. Patent and Trade Office, and rival Microsoft doesn't want to see it win one. Microsoft wants to use the words for its own mobile market, and is hoping the USPTO denies Apple's claim. "Any secondary meaning or fame Apple has in 'App Store' is de facto secondary meaning that cannot convert the generic term 'app store' into a protectable trademark," Microsoft lawyers write in a new motion, as reported by TechFlash. The company wants to argue that the phrase "app store" is a generic, public-domain term Apple can't block its competitors from using. As evidence, it cites the fact that many websites that cover the mobile biz use the phrase "app store" freely to refer to any platform's app market. According to Microsoft, even Apple CEO Steve Jobs said "app store" in an interview to refer to … [Read more...] about Microsoft Disputes Apple’s ‘App Store’ Trademark
Genuine positivity surrounded the announcement of Microsoft's first foray into modern day mobile hardware. In Surface, we had a product that seemed to possess the build quality and production refinement we'd typically associate with an Apple offering, combined with a desktop-level operating system and reasonably powerful specs. Surface - particularly the Intel-powered variant running Windows 8 Pro - looked like a genuine contender. However, the iPad-challenging RT variant didn't look quite so convincing, and now that the final product is in our hands, we'd go further by saying that it is a largely disappointing offering that under-performs in almost every way that matters. Not only that, but it is at least a generation away from competing against Apple's current products - let alone its future hardware. There is some good news, however. In terms of build quality, at least, Microsoft has done pretty well. The slate itself feels good in the hand (though the fanfare surrounding … [Read more...] about Microsoft Surface RT review

Out next month after almost half a decade in development, Remedy's time-twisting Quantum Break is a big deal for Microsoft on several fronts. Once upon a time it was a posterchild for the publisher's “broad entertainment” push on Xbox One, melding live-action TV episodes with sci-fi cover-shooting. Latterly, it has become a flagship title for the youthful Windows 10 Store and DirectX 12. It's also probably the only game you'll ever play in which Littlefinger throws Iceman through a door. What other upcoming PC games will be joining Quantum Break in the near future? Take a look. The PC version of Quantum Break is among the first to run on the Universal Windows Platform, a set of development tools which are designed to work across Xbox and PC. Supposedly, the rise of Universal Windows Apps means that Microsoft can even upgrade the Xbox One itself much like a PC, without forcing owners of the original version to fork out, because UWAs scale to fit the specifications of the … [Read more...] about Remedy on working with Universal Windows Platform, and Microsoft’s plan to blur the line between PC and Xbox One
“It’s time for us to talk about gaming in Windows,” promised Head of Xbox Phil Spencer in December. A little over a month later, Microsoft has finally stepped up to the plate with a slew of big announcements about Windows 10, Xbox and PC gaming delivered at its Redmond campus yesterday morning. The big news for gamers—aside from holograms—is that Windows 10 will not only support multiplayer gaming between Xbox One and PC, but allow you to stream Xbox One games locally to PCs or tablets.Which is all well and good for Xbox fans, but where does that leave PC gamers, especially ones who don’t particularly care about Xbox? “It’s a good question,” said Spencer. “I didn’t want to make today’s presentation all about ‘Hey Xbox One owners, aren’t you glad Windows 10 exists!’ The first thing I was trying to do is just look at some of the social capability we’ve created on console and bring it in a … [Read more...] about Is Windows 10 Good For PC Gamers Or XBone Owners?
If it is former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop who replaces Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO, he may consider selling the Xbox business and killing Google competitor Bing, according to a new report from business publication Bloomberg.People familiar with the matter told the site that Elop, should he get the job, would be ready to sell or close major Microsoft business units if he determines they are not critical to the company's strategic outlook.Elop joined Microsoft when the company purchased the handset maker's mobile business for $7.2 billion in September. He is on the shortlist of potential successors to replace Ballmer, according to reports.Microsoft shares reached their highest price since the early 2000s earlier this week, after Nomura Holdings analyst Rick Sherlund said selling Bing and Xbox could boost earnings by 40 percent in fiscal 2015."Microsoft is trying to do too much, and these assets add no clear value to the overall business," Sherlund said. He also said that Ford CEO Alan … [Read more...] about Microsoft CEO candidate may consider selling Xbox, killing Bing – Report
LAS VEGAS--There are those who believe that Microsoft will drop the mic in its final 2012 Consumer Electronics Show appearance, after bringing down the house with the first official word of the oft-rumored Next Xbox. This speculation comes despite the Xbox 360 still being the dominant console in North America, from both a hardware and software sales perspective. While a full console unveil is a bit of a long shot, Microsoft is likely to have a few announcements up its sleeve for CES 2012. As it pertains to the company's Xbox division, updated statistics for its console and the Xbox Live online network are safe bets, along with new initiatives on bringing original television to its entertainment box. And on the fringe of possibility, Microsoft could use its limelight to trot out a new hardware iteration for the Kinect. Unofficially dubbed the Kinect 2, the device is said to be sophisticated enough to read lips. Rumors also suggest that the motion-sensing peripheral can assess a … [Read more...] about Microsoft ends CES keynote run with Windows 8 focus
