[Ed. note: Out today at itch.io, Okay, Hero is a book analyzing the Metal Gear Solid series. Written by Reid McCarter and Edward Smith — known for their game criticism at Bullet Points Monthly — the text breaks the franchise down in a series of essays covering six of its key games. Below, we have one of those essays in an excerpt focusing on the original Metal Gear Solid.] The Metal Gear Solid guard exists in a state of constant perplexity. Confronted with a cardboard box, or the sound of knuckles rapping against a wall, his invariable response is an out-loud, incredulous “huh?”, the punctuation of which manifests physically above his head, comically exaggerating his bafflement in a turquoise Got Milk?-billboard-size font. The 200 square feet of warehouse that the guard endlessly, circuitously patrols represents his entire universe. The guard’s earth is chipped concrete. His suns are poorly maintained, dully luminescent strip lights. And the blinking LED … [Read more...] about Breaking down Snake’s motivations in Metal Gear Solid

It’s no secret that the upcoming Metal Gear Survive has been divisive in the Metal Gear Solid community. Its departure from series norms and the unceremonious departure of franchise creator Hideo Kojima have rubbed fans the wrong way, but Metal Gear Solid purists on PS4 may soon have some classic Metal Gear Solid experiences to look forward to. When PC players logged onto Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain over the weekend, they witnessed a cutscene that seemed like it would never come. While the nuclear disarmament event seems as unlikely as a Metal Gear character appearing in Death Stranding, it nevertheless triggered, but it wasn’t supposed to happen. For those unfamiliar, the nuclear disarmament event was an official metagame ending that revolved around removing every nuclear weapon in the game’s online servers. Considering the hard-fought meta-conflict in the game, the event never seemed likely, as periodic reports showed that several nukes still existed in the game. However, a glitch with the Steam version of the game triggered the event. The cutscene boldly and ironically declared, “the last nuke’s been decommissioned. It’s over, Boss. I thought this day would never come. ” However, the day did not actually come, causing many players to believe that Konami triggered it as a … [Read more...] about Metal Gear Solid 5 Online Secret Event Finally Triggers
Solid Snake is a fantastic action hero: He looks like he was born with six-pack abs and a cigarette in his mouth. He’s got a gravelly voice, a steely stare and an extremely good aim. But for as perfect as the first Metal Gear Solid is — and in large part because of Snake’s unshakeable bravado — he has nothing on his successor, Metal Gear Solid 2’s Raiden. Yep: Raiden is better than Snake. At least in this game. Whoa — you can’t actually believe that, right? It’s important that I clarify what I mean by “better.” It has nothing to do with strength, stealth abilities, or tactical knowledge. Snake surely has Raiden beat in those areas, with room to spare. But when it comes to what defines the legacy of Metal Gear Solid, the introduction of Raiden to the series is crucial. It was a shocking, polarizing choice that seemed to press reset on all those years that players spent embodying a perfect action hero. To replace Solid Snake … [Read more...] about Metal Gear Solid’s Raiden deserves more love
