Last week, some of the biggest names on Twitch got together to play Fortnite as part of a charity marathon to fight children's cancer. In just 24 hours, Streamers like DrLupo and Ninja helped raise just under $340,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Called #Clips4Kids, this competition challenged streamers to see who could tally up the most points by winning a victory royale in Fortnite while also pulling off stylish final kills. It's a part of a larger Tampa Bay-based community event called GuardianCon that, in just three years, has raised over $2 million for St. Jude Children's Hospital. This year, they're aiming to double that. For most of the big-name streamers participating and the thousands of fans who watch or attend, GuardianCon's fundraisers are a no-brainer: You play some games and raise some money. But for founder and popular Destiny streamer Ben 'ProfessorBroman' Bowman, GuardianCon's mission to give back comes from a more personal place. Sounds like … [Read more...] about How a Destiny meetup grew to become a massive charity event raising over $2 million and counting

Cogmind recently made it through a second whole year of its pre-Steam early access program, and as this period comes to an end I’d like to take the opportunity to, like the first year, share some data and pretty graphs :) This is an interesting milestone because it more or less coincides with the completion of Cogmind’s primary content, represented by the Beta release just last month, meaning it took around two years of work to bring the game from Alpha 1 to Beta 1. And it’s still amazing that support has been sufficient to maintain full-time development for this long--Cogmind’s lifetime revenue passed the $100k mark in April :D. So a big thanks to everyone who has helped it reach this stage! @’s celebrate the Beta :) For a more general summary of late-alpha progress you can check out the data in my 2016 annual review, whereas this article will instead be mostly looking at revenue and pricing. And while the first year of sales data was neat simply … [Read more...] about Cogmind Alpha Year 2 Sales Data (Pre-Steam)
The Overwatch League has a player behavior problem — except it’s not just an Overwatch League problem. It’s a culture problem, and one that has been festering on YouTube and Twitch for years. YouTube and Twitch are platforms that breed toxicity, and creators are often rewarded for their bad behavior. The more that casters yell, belittle or talk about another streamer while playing a game, the more likely it is that people are going to tune into their streams on a regular basis. Some of gaming’s most toxic figures are also some of the most popular. But what happens when those same personalities become professionals? xQc, a professional Overwatch player who was suspended and fined $2,000 by the Overwatch League for making homophobic comments on his own channel, has long been regarded as an aggressive streamer. xQc spoke about his suspension from the Overwatch League in early February pointing out that fellow Overwatch player and streamer Jake gets away with … [Read more...] about Overwatch League needs to figure out what it means to be a professional player
Fatshark held a closed beta for the upcoming co-op rat-battler Warhammer: Vermintide 2 over the weekend, and apparently it quite well. So well, in fact, that the studio has decided to extend it by another 24 hours, and is giving away keys to the first 10,000 people who ask for one. "It’s been an amazing weekend, with millions and millions of Chaos and Skaven enemies eliminated," Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund said. "We are also very appreciative that media and influencers have taken the game to a large audience around the world." The beta will be extended until 9 am PT/12 pm ET on February 27, and keys are available at vermintide2beta.com. Players with existing keys will continue to have access through the extension. A separate, "preorder exclusive" beta test will begin on Wednesday. We spoke with Fatshark about how Vermintide 2 manages to stay true to the first game while delivering new ideas and experiences last weekend at the PC Gamer Weekender. Catch the conversation … [Read more...] about Warhammer: Vermintide 2 beta extended, 10,000 more keys available
Every year before E3, we talk about the games we expect to see, along with the ones that we hope we’ll get to take another look at. These include the obvious ones, like big games announced at the previous year’s conference. But they’re also the hypothetical projects, the titles that we’ve neither seen nor heard from in years — perhaps since they were first announced. Some games have gone quiet much longer than others, though. We’ve gathered up some of the most notable “missing in action” games that we'd love to see make a grand reappearance at this year’s big show. Below, we’ll offer an update on each game, plus our assessment of the likelihood of the project resurfacing at E3 2017 (on a scale of 1 to 10). Follow along and reminisce about some of the industry’s most elusive games. (A quick note: We weighed in on many of these titles last year. In those cases, we’ve generally lifted the original text, with some … [Read more...] about Will these 12 games miss E3 this year?
