Go back a few years and the world of esports was a very different place. Events were smaller in scale, and a lot of companies were trying to cash in on a rapidly growing industry. This resulted in a whole host of events from companies who had no idea what they were doing, with tech delays, cancelled events, and other issues being irritatingly common. Fortunately, in recent years, those kind of events have become rare. The big event companies such as ESL, MLG, and DreamHack – along with publishers who run their own leagues like Riot and Blizzard – have created incredibly high quality events that are almost always issue free. Despite these advancements, Sky Sports broadcast the eChampions 2018 event last night, and it felt like a return to the dark days of esports. The eChampions 2018 event was the second of its kind. The debut show was much smaller and held at the Fnatic Bunkr, a shop/office space for esports organisation Fnatic. This year, the event was a combination of … [Read more...] about Celeb barbers, delays, and light shows – why last night’s eChampions FIFA tournament on Sky Sports was one of the worst ever

A MAN who illegally shared Sky Sports streams online has been ordered to pay £45,000 in fines and damages after being found guilty of infringing the company's copyright. Waqas Rasheed shared broadcasts from the then Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 channels between March 3 and April 1 2017 on shady subscription streaming site IPTVdonations.com. In his defence, Mr Rasheed said that he'd accidentally created the streams while trying to access Sky content online for free. But the judge overseeing the case shot down his excuse, claiming that a lack of intention could not be applied to matters of copyright infringement. He added that the defence has no legal merit in the eyes of the law. To make matters worse, Mr Rasheed skipped his hearing in March without so much as an explanation. In his absence, the judge ruled that he had no defence and found him guilty of infringing Sky's copyright. The ruling comes ahead of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, which was established to … [Read more...] about Man slammed with £45,000 fine for sharing Sky Sports livestreams online
Update Night is a fortnightly column in which Rich McCormick revisits games to find out whether they’ve been changed for better or worse. I died fifty times before I felt the hand of god. Trapped on an unbearably hot world in No Man’s Sky’s survival mode, I died to the teeth of a stubby legged Tyrannosaur. I died to a roving band of sentinel robots, upset that I dared to plunder their planet for ore and isotopes. I died during blazing storms, the already extreme temperature ratcheting up to 300 degrees celsius, and cooking me alive in my space suit. Most often, I simply died from exposure as my suit’s life support drained away and left me without any oxygen to breathe. My ship offered a tantalising escape from the death world, but a series of cascading dependencies put its functions out of reach. I couldn’t take off without Plutonium, but I didn’t have enough residual life support left to go hunting for Plutonium. I could recharge my life … [Read more...] about Has No Man’s Sky been improved by its updates?
No Man's Sky's entertainingly convoluted Waking Titan ARG appears to be back, and fans are picking apart its mysterious messages in a bid to work out what might be next for Hello Games' ever-expanding space game. Waking Titan began meting out its carefully orchestrated parade of online and real-world enigmas soon after it was discovered in May last year. Before long, participants had linked it to No Man's Sky, and it eventually culminated, some three months later, with the release of the game's 1.3 update, also known as Atlas Rises. There's a great summary video of the whole ARG so far by YouTuber CobraTV below. Atlas Rises added an enormous number of features and improvements to No Man's Sky, including a brand-new story, interstellar portals, a new alien race, improvements to exploration, flight, and trading, randomly generated quests, and even the beginnings of multiplayer co-op. It was a big 'un, and managed to rekindle my initially short-lived enthusiasm for the game into a 200+ … [Read more...] about No Man’s Sky’s Waking Titan ARG is back, and fans are trying to figure it all out again
