Ever since the somewhat mixed responses Microsoft got for their current operating system Windows 8, it's been an uphill battle for the tech giant (surely somewhat softened by the terrible PR time Apple is having at the moment with #bendgate) and their good will among consumers. How to combat that? How about some free operating systems? Still Worried About Your iPhone 6 Plus Bending? Here Are A Couple Options For Cases To Keep Your $300 Investment Safe The Indonesian news site Detik (thanks to a heads-up from PC Gamer) has a statement from the president of Microsoft Indonesia Antonio Diantoro confirming Windows 9 will be a free update for all Windows 8 users, not unlike the most recent update Windows 8.1. Android and Apple users are used to free upgrades, so this is not just an OS update for Microsoft, but a chance to be thought of positively and more consumer-friendly once again. This would definitely be a first for Microsoft, as updates within an edition have always been … [Read more...] about Windows 9 Free Upgrade From Windows 8? Microsoft Prez Says Yes

“When people call Microsoft ‘evil’, it’s kind of an undeserved compliment. To be evil, you have to have vision, you have to have communication, execution…” Rewind three years, to the Eurogamer Expo, London, October 2010. The staff of Rock, Paper, Shotgun are discussing which game from the Indie Arcade we would decree to be our game of the show. Messhof’s sadly still-private swordfighting micro-epic Nidhogg ultimately took home the trophy, but we were a hair’s breadth from giving it to Skulls of the Shogun. This colourful and witty turn-based strategy game starred undead Samurai, and deftly condensed and remixed what can be a hoary old genre into something fresh, fast and thoughtful. When I played the game then, it seemed slick and surely not far from completion. I anticipated being able to play it just a few months later. I anticipated it finding itself a great many fans on PC. For many and complicated reasons, I was wrong. It’s now … [Read more...] about The Sorry Saga Of Skulls Of The Shogun & Windows 8
here? Or don’t, because it’s a bit dry. So here’s my summary of the more game-relevant bits…Touch first, Metro UI. This is the big new thing. Previous iterations of Windows have had support for touch screen controls (I think at least as far back as XP), but with Windows 8, there is a whole new UI designed around touch interface. You will still be able to use keyboard and mouse for everything, and you can also easily switch back to the classic Windows interface if you prefer. “Metro” is the name they give to swish menus with panning and zooming, following on from ‘Aero’, which powers Vista/7’s 3D and translucent bits.Fundamental performance gains: On a 3 year old netbook, for example, the current build of Windows 8 uses 281MB of RAM, whereas Windows 7 would use 404mb. Extra RAM being available for games could be quite nice to have, especially on older systems. All Windows 7 apps will work on Windows 8. In fact, they said … [Read more...] about Windows 8: Is It Any Cop?
The Windows 8 regulations state that any game rated above PEGI 16+ will not be available through the Windows digital store. Given the number of hugely commercial titles that fall in that bracket, Microsoft appear not only to be shooting themselves in the foot but sawing off their leg as well, but this could be much more than an odd business decision. What if it’s not just about sales but about distribution and the open nature of the platform as a whole? Let’s get ready to grumble.I haven’t used Windows 8 and haven’t been particularly outspoken as the conversation as to how ‘closed’ a platform it might be rumbles on. I’ve been holding to the opinion that even if the Windows Store is the method by which purchases integrate with the new user interface, I’ll be found over in the classic Windows mode, which appears to be as open as ever. That’s not to say that the presence of a cloistered area within the operating system – a closed … [Read more...] about Windows 8 Marketplace Will Not Carry PEGI 18+ Games
There hasn't been a whole lot of love for Microsoft's new operating system as of late, and it looks like all of the negativity has directly affected sales, as a new report suggests that Windows 8 has failed to find the success Microsoft was expecting.According to Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows (via GameSpot), a "trusted source at Microsoft" has said that the sales of Windows 8 were not only described as being "disappointing" but also "well below Microsoft's internal projections."As far as we know right now, Microsoft has sold a total of 4 million copies of the operating system. Let's also not forget that the company's new line of Surface tablets just recently launched with the software as well. Have you purchased Windows 8? If so, let us know what you think of the new OS thus far and whether or not you think it will have any major impact on the future of PC gaming. … [Read more...] about Windows 8 Sales Allegedly Below Projections
