If you’re looking for a second PC, a compact gaming box, or an upgrade from an ancient rig that coughs out dust and grinding requests to be put out of its misery every time the fans start spinning, you might be tempted to take out a new credit card and a lien against your home to afford the latest gear. But accepting a small amount of compromise means you can build a new rig that will muscle through the majority of top games and won’t cost the earth—in fact, it could cost less than a console and do a better job.But what compromise? The first is accepting that you don’t need a monster GPU. You also don’t need a super-modern CPU, particularly if you’re leaning toward gaming. Previous generations still have a lot of muscle left, and they’re common enough that they’re ripe for exploitation. The other big compromise might sting: You’re going to have to drop your aesthetic aspirations. Tinted windows, pretty RGB accents, and gorgeous … [Read more...] about How to turn an old office PC into an affordable gaming platform
You wimp! Readers as old as our executive editor, Alan, will know that Windows Icons Menus and Mouse Pointer (WIMP) is the ancient acronym that describes the original mouse-driven graphical interfaces that spawned out of Xerox labs. Despite a messy attempt with Windows 8, Microsoft was never able to kill off the classic icon-based desktop that most PC users know and love.We should admit to the truth, though: The classic desktop isn't so great. It’s as bad as a real desktop. You’ll leave your garbage scattered all over it—empty coffee mugs, Oreo crumbs, and worse. It is, however, a little draconian to utterly ban the ability to keep recent items left handily on your desktop. Surely there’s a helpful middle ground? The smart news is there’s a host of clever, useful, and possibly silly add-ons for Windows that push the desktop to the next level of functionality. We’re going to quickly run through what we think are the best five(ish) that are worth your … [Read more...] about How to enhance your Windows desktop

We've been eagerly awaiting the PC version of Final Fantasy 15 for some time. It's the chance to see Square-Enix's stunning Luminous Studio engine freed from the constraints of console hardware. Enhanced versions of those visuals running at 4K resolution or a locked 60fps? The potential here is mouthwatering, but the question is just what hardware will be required to push beyond the standards set by PS4 Pro and Xbox One X - and how optimal the PC port is. A PC benchmarking tool was released at the beginning of the month, and first impressions based on mainstream hardware are sobering. We always expected the PC 'Windows Edition' to be challenging, but the benchmark is already causing controversy owing to its heavy integration of Nvidia's GameWorks libraries - bespoke 'black box' technology created by the Green Team's engineers, and integrated by Square-Enix. There's enhanced foliage via TurfWorks, beefed up fluid, fire and smoke simulation courtesy of Nvidia Flow, plus more realistic … [Read more...] about Final Fantasy 15 Windows Edition looks beautiful but at what cost?
