Building large scale cloud infrastructure using shared components – Unity Blog
As Unity Ads engineering team, we got invited to the DEVOPS 2018 conference in Helsinki in December 2018, to present how we have approached the challenge of scaling up our systems to handle a 10x increase in load over a period of four years. Among other things, we discussed what we learned from our first incomplete migration attempt and how we applied that knowledge when successfully migrating our large-scale infrastructure to the Google Cloud platform. This blog post follows up on our talk with more details on the topic, and some general advice for similar big projects. Video from the presentation is available here: DEVOPS 2018 – Unity Technologies Keynote, Day 2 Our mission at Unity is to help you become successful with your games, whether you’re a publisher who’s building a business around games through monetization with ads, or an advertiser aiming to acquire new users. Over the last four years, the number of ads shown per week in mobile games integrating our … [Read more...] about Building large scale cloud infrastructure using shared components – Unity Blog
Fresh Prince’s Alfonso Ribeiro is suing Epic over use of his Carlton Dance in Fortnite
Alfonso Ribeiro, the actor most famously known for portraying Carlton Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, is taking Epic Games to court. Like rapper 2 Milly before him, Ribeiro is suing Epic Games for using his famous dance without permission or compensation. The actor performed a particular dance on the show, which became known as the Carlton. In Fortnite, the dance was recreated as the Fresh emote, which is clearly inspired by the Carlton. The Fresh emote sells for 800 V-Bucks, which is around $8. According to TMZ, Ribeiro is in the process of claiming copyright for the dance. This is important because dances aren’t typically protected against copyright infringement unless the creator went to the lengths of actually copyrighting them. “Epic has earned record profits off of downloadable content in the game, including emotes like ‘Fresh.’ Yet Epic has failed to compensate or even ask permission from Mr. Ribeiro for the use of his likeness and iconic … [Read more...] about Fresh Prince’s Alfonso Ribeiro is suing Epic over use of his Carlton Dance in Fortnite
Arma 3’s new Warlords mode features large-scale combat for control of an island
A free update to the first-person military shooter Arma 3 has added a new large-scale competitive multiplayer mode called Warlords. First and foremost, it is not a battle royale: Instead, it puts NATO and CSAT teams in bases on opposite sides of the map, from where they must conquer AI-controlled sectors, chain them together into a route across the island, and then launch an assault on the enemy base. Players who do well in battle will be rewarded with Command Points, which can be used to call in vehicles, AI-controlled reinforcements, better weapons and gear, or for "strategic advantages" like fast travel or sector scans. Command Points are earned by killing enemies and taking control of sectors, and sectors will also generate points for whichever team controls them. The new mode is clearly focused on competitive multiplayer combat, but players can also opt to team up on one side to do battle with the AI, and it can be played solo as well, with AI handling friendly and enemy … [Read more...] about Arma 3’s new Warlords mode features large-scale combat for control of an island
World War 3 promises large-scale modern combat and battle royale later this year
The Farm 51, whose previous games include Get Even, Painkiller: Hell and Damnation, and Necrovision, has unveiled its latest project, a modern-military multiplayer FPS called—and full points for subtlety on this one—World War 3. The new game will offer "large-scale combined arms battles with infantry, armored vehicles, and drones," and of course there will also be a separate battle royale mode called Recon. Recon mode will be a fairly small-scale affair, built around individual reconnaissance squads tasked with capturing high-value targets in hostile territory. The Warzone mode is intended to be more strategic, with combined arms combat based on real-world military forces and locations such as Warsaw, Berlin, and Moscow. The big-picture war will also unfold across a strategic map: Kills, destroyed vehicles, and other achievements will all have an impact on the direction of the war, which will eventually consume the entire planet. World War 3 is expected to launch … [Read more...] about World War 3 promises large-scale modern combat and battle royale later this year
