Nov. 7, 1980: “The day Steve McQueen died.” It was a full-moon night, the week after Halloween, when the town of West Fingers, Arkansas, changed forever. A boy was dead, his kid sister missing, and the sleepy Ozark community was irrevocably contorted; once an innocuous spot of brown country, it would now be the site of an infamous crime of duplicitous origin. Did a gang of metal-obsessed teens kill Will Purcell and kidnap his sister Julie? Was it their uncle? A local pedophile? Or was there something darker at play in West Fingers, something that — decades later — is still spinning its web of evil? That’s the basic setup for the third season of True Detective, HBO’s gritty noir anthology series from creator (and occasional internet punching bag) Nic Pizzolatto. The first season, directed by Cary Fukunaga (Maniac) with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as leads, was a masterpiece of weird fiction, a Lovecraftian horror fable about a seedy … [Read more...] about True Detective Season 3’s first two episodes ramp up the satanic panic

To understand the socio-political effect YouTube has on the world in 2018, you first have to ask: What is YouTube? There’s a divide between how a large portion of the general public views YouTube — as an open platform where almost any ideology can live — and how YouTube executives seem to regard their company — as a stage for encouraging social change. That dichotomy led to the alleged “YouTube Purge” this past week, a term coined by predominantly right-wing voices that say YouTube is trying to remove their content from the site and censor free speech. It all came to a head on March 3, when Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist who owns and hosts on the right-wing network Infowars, said that YouTube was going to delete his personal channel and all of his videos on March 4. “The Alex Jones channel with billions of views is frozen,” he tweeted. “We have been told it will be deleted tomorrow and all 33 thousands (sic) videos will be … [Read more...] about How does YouTube decide to get rid of certain channels?
A Russian TV channel has just become the latest in the series of TV stations mistakenly using video game footage. Recently, Russia's Channel 1 aired a clip from Arma 3 during a segment celebrating its military forces for the Russian holiday, Defender of the Fatherland Day.As reported by the BBC, the relevant portion of the segment was focused on Roman Filippov, an Su-25 "Frogfoot" pilot who was shot down and killed in Syria earlier this month. The quick glimpse of Arma 3 was spotted by users of Russian social media site Pikabu. For a while, the users speculated on the various reasons why this could've happened. Some suggested that it was a deliberate move, while others stated that it was an accident that indicated a lowering of standards at Channel 1, one of the main state-run news sources in the country. Channel 1 finally cleared up the controversy, however, explaining that it was a mistake and an editor had accidentally put the wrong footage from the archive in the segment. Such a … [Read more...] about Russian TV Program Uses Arma 3 Gameplay In Segment Celebrating Armed Forces
A Russian television station has mistakenly aired footage from a video game during a report on the war in Syria. As noted by the BBC, the suspicious footage was edited into a segment celebrating members of the country's armed forces on weekly programme Voskresnoye Vremya, which runs on Russia's state-run Channel One TV. At one point in the video, a truck is shown being targeted through a gun sight. While the clip's appearance was brief enough to pass unnoticed by most, users of Russia's Reddit-like community site Pikabu were a little more observant, quickly identifying the footage as being from developer Bohemia Interactive's ARMA 3. Channel One later explained that "the use of this frame was a mistake by the video editing director, who took it from the archive." It seems that the ARMA 3 clip originally made its way into the station's catalogue as part of a segment on video games. Of course, the Russian media does have a bit of a history with this sort of thing. Last … [Read more...] about Russian TV station mistakenly airs footage of ARMA 3 during report on war in Syria
Johnny Dee isn’t the most well-known name on YouTube, but he’s inspired battle cries across the platform as creators band together to help him try to reclaim his lost channel. Johnny Dee, whose real name is John De Nardis, uploads covers of songs, one of YouTube’s most popular genres. Although Dee is an older man, he gained attention for his takes on popular hip-hop and rap tracks, like Lil Pump’s “Gucci Gang” and Jake Paul’s “It’s Everyday Bro,” which are typically geared toward a younger audience. Dozens of YouTubers, most notably PewDiePie, took notice of Dee’s channel and made their own videos about the singer. Dee reached the peak of his popularity after PewDiePie uploaded video on Dec. 26, 2017, called, “This man should have been in YouTube Rewind.” The video gives an overview of who Johnny Dee is, and following the video’s release to nearly 60 million subscribers, Dee exploded in popularity.
