Netflix Suspends Service In Russia In Response To Ukraine Invasion
Netflix has announced that it is suspending service in Russia in response to the country's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The streaming service's decision last week to discontinue its current projects and acquisitions in Russia, including four originals set in the country, has now been followed up with a more damning stance on the devastating invasion that has now stretched into its third week. The company is indefinitely shuttering its service altogether in support of Ukraine. “Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,” a Netflix spokesperson said. Netflix is one of the dozens of companies that have paused distribution or service in Russia following its unprovoked attacks on Ukraine. Last week, Microsoft opted to halt all new sales in the country, and the gaming industry as a whole is stepping up to support Ukraine . Of course, this is all in addition to sweeping sanctions from countries across the world that aim to apply … [Read more...] about Netflix Suspends Service In Russia In Response To Ukraine Invasion
Take-Two on a potential buyout: “We like being an independent organization”
Video game companies are being acquired by bigger video game companies at a frightening pace, but it sounds like Rockstar and 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive will remain independent for the time being. In an interview with IGN , Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed some hesitation about a buyout in general while acknowledging that the interests of the company's shareholders are most important. "We're a public company, and we're here for the shareholders," Zelnick said. "That said, our track record of creating value as an independent enterprise is pretty terrific, especially if you exclude the last three months. We think there's plenty of great times ahead, and we like being an independent organization. But we're here for the shareholders." Take-Two itself recently acquired mobile developer Zynga for an earth-shattering $12.7 billion, which had been the biggest acquisition in the video game industry until Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 … [Read more...] about Take-Two on a potential buyout: “We like being an independent organization”

HDMI Used To Simplify Our Home Theaters, Now It’s Adding Confusion
This month, I tried to upgrade my home theater setup with an LG C1 OLED television and an HDMI 2.1 receiver. Tried . In doing so, I discovered what a nightmare HDMI 2.1's definition of "compatibility" is. When HDMI arrived on the scene almost 20 years ago, it seemed like a godsend: Instead of having to plug in five cables to get a 480p image with stereo audio, you could just plug in one cable. It was universal, had a directional configuration to make sure you couldn't plug it in upside down, and it just worked. Two decades later, though, HDMI is alive and well but has somehow become needlessly confusing. Instead of a simple spec with complex cables, we're now saddled with one simple cable and a truly baffling set of specs. Listen ye to my cautionary tale and beware the dark woods of HDMI. What is HDMI 2.1? HDMI 2.1 is the latest version of the High-Definition Multimedia Interface connector first unveiled in 2002. The initial HDMI 2.1 spec represented a big jump forward for the … [Read more...] about HDMI Used To Simplify Our Home Theaters, Now It’s Adding Confusion
Gears Of War Getting MCC-Style Collection – Report
Microsoft is developing a Halo: The Master Chief Collection-style compilation package themed around Gears of War, according to a new report. Nick Baker of Xbox Era revealed this on a podcast recently. "A while back I said there is another Microsoft franchise that's getting the Master Chief Collection-type treatment, I am of the belief that that is coming this year," Baker said ( via VGC ), adding that this will be Gears of War. The Master Chief Collection launched in 2014 on Xbox One, and it struggled mightily at launch with server issues and other problems. Developer 343 Industries has supported, grown, and evolved the game significantly since then, and it's now in great shape-- even outperforming Halo Infinite on Steam. The package contains all mainline Halo titles (including remastered versions of Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2), full multiplayer support, Forge, Theater, and more. The game is available on Xbox Game Pass for all subscribers. It remains to be seen … [Read more...] about Gears Of War Getting MCC-Style Collection – Report
Halo Infinite Dev: “We Understand The Community Is Simply Out Of Patience”
A Halo Infinite developer has acknowledged that the fan community surrounding the game is "simply out of patience" and growing tired of hearing developer 343 Industries talk about updates to come in the future instead of delivering them. Writing on Reddit , Halo community director Brian Jarrard said the studio is not pleased by how it cannot meet the expectations of players. There is no silver bullet for making things better, Jarrard said ( via VGC ). "There are indeed a lot of challenges and constraints. We're certainly not happy to be unable to meet player and community expectations, it's a difficult situation that's going to take the team time to work through," he explained. The current focus for 343 is Season 2: Lone Wolves, which arrives in May. More details about this are expected soon. A blog post about Halo Infinite's Season 1 "outcomes" and feedback is coming today, April 1, but this likely won't have much of significance for Season 2, Jarrard said. In his post … [Read more...] about Halo Infinite Dev: “We Understand The Community Is Simply Out Of Patience”
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – the story behind the biggest game of the year
Everything was Uncharted. You’ll have seen the jokes, no doubt – the ones that pointed out how many games at E3 2012 seemed to be based on an external interpretation of the Naughty Dog design document. That show brought a host of linear games built on tightly scripted spectacle, sacrificing player agency for the whims of a stubborn author. The complaint was aimed at other developers, at an industry in thrall to the cookie cutter, but it stung Naughty Dog by extension as well. Many of those games have since turned out to be nothing like Uncharted. At December’s PlayStation Experience (PSX) event, filmed live in Vegas and streamed around the world, Naughty Dog suggested Uncharted 4 wasn’t, in the E3 2012 pejorative sense of the term, very Uncharted either. Over the course of a day inside the Santa Monica studio, we are shown the proof of it. Within half an hour, game director Bruce Straley has summed it up perfectly. “There’s no one golden path,” he tells us. “It’s not just as simple as … [Read more...] about Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – the story behind the biggest game of the year
