Frogwares has released a The Sinking City trailer featuring some deliciously Lovecraftian gameplay. The Sinking City is an investigation game based on the works of HP Lovecraft that was shown off at this year’s E3, and it’s shaping up to be a maddeningly-fun experience. The Sinking City is one of two Lovecraft-based games that saw the spotlight at E3 in June. The first is Call of Cthulhu, a survival-horror game being published by Focus Home Interactive. This one, however, is a narrative-focused adventure game that puts you in the shoes of an investigator named Charles Reed. It’s just had a gameplay trailer released, titled ‘A Close Shave,’ and it’s deliciously Eldritch-feeling. Whereas with Call of Cthulhu it looks like we’ll get a pretty standard survival horror experience, there seems to be more of a Bioshock vibe from The Sinking City trailer. There’s swing music, there are fish people stood beside barrel … [Read more...] about The Sinking City Trailer Released, Gameplay Oozes Lovecraft Themes

Publisher 1C Company has announced a game set in the strange worlds of HP Lovecraft called Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, a roleplaying game of horror, loss, and madness. The game was developed by Cultic Games and has strategic, turn-based combat from a 2D perspective. In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, players will choose from 8 main character archetypes, each with their own backstory and specialties, and journey from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss. The game’s enemies, environments, and storylines are inspired by Lovecraft’s original works, and a host of weird companions will accompany players on their journey. The trailer features a tableau of creepy imagery and scattered words written in blood urging players to investigate the strange occurrences in the city and to survive the rise of darkness both physically and mentally. When HP Lovecraft wrote the definition of the genre he more-or-less invented, he did it with the understanding that weird fiction was always going to be a niche taste. In his 1927 essay, Supernatural Horror in Literature, he declared that: "tales of ordinary feelings and events, or of common sentimental distortions of such feelings and events, will always take first place in the taste of the majority; rightly, perhaps, since of course these matters make up the greater part of human experience." Barely able to generate an income, chewed up and spat out by the pulp magazines, and finally, dying painfully of untreated stomach cancer ten years later, Lovecraft could reasonably have expected to be forgotten. Except, he wasn't. Nine decades later, Lovecraft is everywhere, deeply embedded in the language of books, movies and - especially - video games. Upcoming survival horror Call of Cthulu from Cyanide is explicitly based on the Lovecraft short story, but his tentacled imagination of … [Read more...] about Why can’t we forget Lovecraft?
Gleaner Heights is a Harvest Moon-inspired retro-styled farming sim developed entirely by one man, a very basic outline that sounds a lot like the indie mega-hit Stardew Valley. To a point, that's true. During the day you'll grow crops, tend your animals, hunt, fish, cook, befriend the townsfolk, and perhaps even pursue romance. But things take a turn when the sun goes down. The game begins as you take your first steps toward a new life as a farmer in the charming little town of Gleaner Heights. "Grab your trusty tools and transform your farm into the richest field in town! Over 40 crops await for you to discover and plant them. Tend to your animals, make them happy and collect their produce! Keep them either inside the barn or make fenced perimeters outside to let them graze under the sun," the Steam Page says. Scroll down a little, though, and you'll learn that your adopted home is not quite as it seems. "Discover the haunting past of Gleaner Heights, from its early days … [Read more...] about Gleaner Heights is a retro farming sim that mixes Harvest Moon with HP Lovecraft
The work of H.P. Lovecraft led to the creation of the Cthulhu Mythos, a series of non-fiction stories about nameless, ageless beings of pure power and hatred. Some claim that the work is fantasy, but they did not stand with me in the dark library, speaking the dreaded words of He With All Those Apostrophes In His Name For Some Reason. Also, one of Lovecraft’s poems is remarkably close in rhythm to a Billy Joel song. Which is how we got the following recording, which is one of the best things ever released in the history of man, or at least in this portion of our small, dust-like influence on this globe of cold rock as it flies in space, ignorant of our very existence. Waiting to be plucked from the obscurity of existence from the slumbering gods whose name we dare not speak. Listening to Billy Joel. We apparently have Birth Movies Death to thank for this amazing piece of art, and there are more! Life is wonderful. … [Read more...] about Enjoy this H.P.
