Publisher 1C Company has announced a game set in the strange worlds of HP Lovecraft called Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, a roleplaying game of horror, loss, and madness. The game was developed by Cultic Games and has strategic, turn-based combat from a 2D perspective. In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, players will choose from 8 main character archetypes, each with their own backstory and specialties, and journey from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss. The game’s enemies, environments, and storylines are inspired by Lovecraft’s original works, and a host of weird companions will accompany players on their journey. The trailer features a tableau of creepy imagery and scattered words written in blood urging players to investigate the strange occurrences in the city and to survive the rise of darkness both physically and mentally. The game’s belief system determines how your character copes with the warped reality of the new Arkham as well as … [Read more...] about Experience the World of HP Lovecraft in Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones

We talked earlier this month about how it would be nice if game makers would give Lovecraft a rest and explore some different horror settings instead. (In case I haven't mentioned it previously, I would pay real money for a good game based on Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.) Maybe it'll happen someday, but not today: Today we have word of a new game in development called Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, "a role-playing game of horror, loss, and madness set in the strange worlds of HP Lovecraft." Stygian players will create characters based on one of eight archetypes (or choose one that's premade) and embark on a journey from the town of Arkham to the depths of the Abyss. Sanity will suffer under the strain, but can be maintained and restored through a "Belief System" mechanic that will also impact dialog options and outcomes. The action will unfold on a hand-drawn 2D map, with turn-based tactical combat featuring powerful black magic that comes at a very high price. The teaser … [Read more...] about Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is an old-school RPG set in Lovecraft’s horrific realm
If you're partial to mountains of madness or things on doorsteps, this is your year. Cyanide's Call of Cthulhu adaptation will release on 30th October for PC, Xbox One and PS4, publisher Focus Home Interactive has announced.Charmingly subtitled "The Official Video Game", the adaptation has had a rough time in development - it began life back in 2014 at Adventures of Sherlock Holmes studio Frogwares, known and feared for its teleporting Watson, only to fetch up in Cyanide's hands after a reported two years of inactivity. Of course, it won't be a proper HP Lovecraft adaptation unless everybody involved with the project vanishes in eerie circumstances save for a single QA tester who spends the rest of their days babbling about angles you can smell and colours you can taste.I had a chance to see this at a Focus Home showcase a few months ago. The game stars private detective Edward Pierce, who travels to remote Darkwater Island near Boston, Massachussets to investigate the deaths of an … [Read more...] about Doom-haunted Call of Cthulhu game finally gets a release date
When HP Lovecraft wrote the definition of the genre he more-or-less invented, he did it with the understanding that weird fiction was always going to be a niche taste. In his 1927 essay, Supernatural Horror in Literature, he declared that: "tales of ordinary feelings and events, or of common sentimental distortions of such feelings and events, will always take first place in the taste of the majority; rightly, perhaps, since of course these matters make up the greater part of human experience." Barely able to generate an income, chewed up and spat out by the pulp magazines, and finally, dying painfully of untreated stomach cancer ten years later, Lovecraft could reasonably have expected to be forgotten. Except, he wasn't. Nine decades later, Lovecraft is everywhere, deeply embedded in the language of books, movies and - especially - video games. Upcoming survival horror Call of Cthulu from Cyanide is explicitly based on the Lovecraft short story, but his tentacled imagination of … [Read more...] about Why can’t we forget Lovecraft?
Gleaner Heights is a Harvest Moon-inspired retro-styled farming sim developed entirely by one man, a very basic outline that sounds a lot like the indie mega-hit Stardew Valley. To a point, that's true. During the day you'll grow crops, tend your animals, hunt, fish, cook, befriend the townsfolk, and perhaps even pursue romance. But things take a turn when the sun goes down. The game begins as you take your first steps toward a new life as a farmer in the charming little town of Gleaner Heights. "Grab your trusty tools and transform your farm into the richest field in town! Over 40 crops await for you to discover and plant them. Tend to your animals, make them happy and collect their produce! Keep them either inside the barn or make fenced perimeters outside to let them graze under the sun," the Steam Page says. Scroll down a little, though, and you'll learn that your adopted home is not quite as it seems. "Discover the haunting past of Gleaner Heights, from its early days … [Read more...] about Gleaner Heights is a retro farming sim that mixes Harvest Moon with HP Lovecraft
