“It’s ingrained in humanity to be scared” – How games are challenging the taboos of disability and mental health

August 11, 2018 gamesradar Leave a Comment

All The Dead Bones is game about suffering as seen through the eyes of other people, a memoir of growing up with a severe spinal deformity that keeps its audience at a pointed remove. Written mostly in the second-person, the game forces the player to occupy a range of uncomfortable perspectives with regard to its writer and designer, Owl Cave CEO Olivia White: a stranger hurling abuse in a park, a catastrophically self-satisfied surgeon, a distracted shopper, a surgical rod. “Basically, I didn’t want players to play as me,” White tells us. “My experiences were my own – and all the incidents in All The Dead Bones happened – and since part of the plot revolves around my feelings of alienation, I didn’t want to give people the impression that they were able to ‘get into my head’ so to speak, or experience things how I did, because they simply don’t have the disability and chronic pain to go with it.Gaining real … [Read more...] about “It’s ingrained in humanity to be scared” – How games are challenging the taboos of disability and mental health

Do blue sharks attack humans, how dangerous are they and are they in British waters?

July 18, 2018 thesun Leave a Comment

BLUE sharks are known to prowl the Mediterranean sea, but they can also be found in British waters. So do we need to fear these creatures from the deep or have our jaws just got wagging over nothing? Do blue sharks attack humans? Blue sharks have been known to attack humans but they could hardly be described as frequent "man-eaters". The predators, which have been known to reach up to 12 feet in length, have been implicated in precious few attacks on humans. Since the year 1580 blue sharks have been thought to have been involved in just 13 biting incidents with only four of those being fatal. And according to the University of Florida, there are only only 12 unprovoked attacks on record. How dangerous are blue sharks? Which sharks are in UK waters, how rare are shark attacks and have great whites ever been seen off the British coast?

May 15, 2018 thesun Leave a Comment

THE waters around Britain are home to more than 40 different species of shark, including the second largest fish in the whole world - the terrifying basking shark. So which species are the most likely to be spotted off UK coast - and how rare are shark attacks? Here's what we know. Which sharks are in UK waters? More than 40 different species of shark pass through UK waters, but only 21 of these can be found all year round. The porbeagle is one of the most common types of shark to be spotted by British fisherman. Its distinctive dorsal fin and long powerful body are among the characteristics that make the creature resemble a great white. Thankfully, there has never been a confirmed case of a porbeagle killing a human, as the predators feed on smaller fish. The basking shark is another species that regularly causes alarm in British waters. Even though the creature can grow up to ten metres long, and has a worryingly large jaw, it's highly unlikely they will attack as they feast on … [Read more...] about Which sharks are in UK waters, how rare are shark attacks and have great whites ever been seen off the British coast?
