With the Switch, Nintendo has a platform that offers a second chance to games that were criminally overlooked when originally released on the company’s previous system, the poorly performing Wii U. One of the Wii U’s best efforts, the charming puzzle-action game Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker comes to Nintendo Switch (and Nintendo 3DS systems) this week, giving Nintendo fans an opportunity to atone for the sin of missing it the first time around. Not much has changed for the Switch version of Captain Toad. The game is still a smart, charming series of puzzles starring Toad and Toadette as they hunt for treasure with a disarming cheerfulness. Levels are made mostly of tiny dioramas, like tiny chunks carved out of larger, more traditional 3D Super Mario Bros. levels, that must be twisted, turned and explored to pluck out every secret. The goal in most levels is to walk (or quickly waddle) Captain Toad or Toadette toward a glittering gold star. It’s the optional … [Read more...] about Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Switch is a can’t-miss Wii U port

Nintendo Switch has been on the market less than 11 months, but it has already outsold its predecessor, the Wii U. Around 12.13 million Switch units were sold during the nine months ending December 31, 2017, with 2.74 million sold during the hybrid console's debut month last March.Overall, this means 14.87 million Switches had been sold by the end of December last year. As of October 31, 2017, Wii U hardware sales stood at 13.56 million. Barring an unlikely 1.31 million Wii U consoles being sold in November and December, this means the Switch has almost certainly outsold the Wii U. More up-to-date sales figures for Wii U have not been provided.Switch sales are now not too far off those of the Gamecube, which sold 21.74 million, but they're still far behind those of the ultra-successful Wii, which reached around 101.63 million units sold.Nintendo has also confirmed that Super Mario Odyssey is the console's best-selling game to date. The platformer sold 9 million units up until the end … [Read more...] about Nintendo Switch Outsells Wii U In Just 10 Months
The Wii U is supposed to be out this year. It's never going to launch post-Christmas, so that means we're four months at most from launch. But having played it at Gamescom, I'm not convinced it's all coming together as coherently and convincingly as you would hope for a console so close to being released into the wider world. So let's look at a few key areas and the good and bad examples seen at Gamescom. Graphics compared to PS3/360 Everyone wants to know how the machine's shaping up against its peers. I can confirm visual quality has improved tangibly in ZombiU. Having played the E3 demo at an event in London a few months back, the difference is evident in the new Buckingham Palace level. The edges of the characters are no longer razor-sharp, movement seems more fluid and the game now looks about on par with a modern Xbox 360 title. Above: ZombiU may still have relatively simple geometry, but it's looking slicker now But a cross-platform comparison is what you want, right? Well … [Read more...] about Wii U: The good news and bad news after more quality time with Nintendo’s new console at Gamescom
For a large proportion of the last year, the more hopeful hardcore have been operating under the belief that the Wii U is a completely different kind of console to the Wii. We've been working on the assumption, cultivated by Nintendo, that the Wii's successor would be much more similar in culture to the Nintendo machines of old. Goodbye casual party crap, hello AAA good-times. But the thing is, despite the extra horsepower, I don't think the two machines currently are too dissimilar if you look at their respective early game line-ups. In fact having played a bunch of the Wii U's early games, I've spotted quite a few parallels between the two. Some are obvious, some are slightly more abstract, but there are certain game types and demographic-baiters that blatantly crop up in both launch-window line-ups. So much so, that I decided to make a comparison feature out of them, so that I could answer the most important question here. Is the Wii U a real change for Nintendo, or an HD … [Read more...] about Wii U vs. Wii: Are their games REALLY that different? And if not, which one does them better?
