A proposed bill before the Arizona House of Representatives could have big implications for Epic Games' legal battle against Apple and Google over Fortnite . If it is ultimately passed into law, it could create another facet for the ongoing litigation between the software giants. The Verge reports that an amendment to Arizona's HB2005 prevents app stores in the state from forcing developers to use their preferred payment system. In practice, that would mean that Apple and Google can't require Epic Games or other software developers to go through their own proprietary payment systems for in-app purchases. The legislation places the restriction on stores exceeding 1 million downloads, which would include Apple's App Store and the Google Play store, and bars those companies from retaliating against developers who use third-party payment systems. The new Pikmin game from Nintendo and Pokémon Go developer Niantic has begun a public test in Singapore, it was announced this morning. Players in the region can download the app now via Google Play, and be the first in the world able to try it out. A proposed Arizona bill that appeared primed to insert the state in the middle of the ongoing legal battle between Epic and Apple/Google looks to be dead on arrival. Arizona House Bill 2005 was passed over for a vote after support seemed to wane last-minute. HB2005 was set to come up for a vote last week, but the House passed over it on the schedule. The Senate has reportedly pulled the bill, and its sponsor told The Verge that it won't be coming back for the rest of the year. That seems to effectively kill the bill for the time being, and if it does come back it could be after the legal dispute has had its day in court. Lawmakers have suggested industry lobbying may have had an effect. State representative Regina Cobb, who sponsored the bill, said Apple and Google "hired almost every lobbyist in town." Ficker and Activision are involved in a trademark dispute over the name Warzone as applied to a videogame , and things are getting heated. Ficker launched Warzone in 2017. Activision launched Call of Duty: Warzone in 2020. As Ficker says on his GoFundMe, "The law is clear: If you use a name in commerce before someone else, they can't sue you to get rights for that name." Meanwhile, Activision's complaint mentions that while Call of Duty: Warzone isn't available on mobile devices, "Defendant's Warzone is one of many games titled 'Warzone' that are available on the internet as a browser-based game or on mobile distribution platforms".
