I've had this video open in a tab on my laptop for weeks, and occasionally I watch it again, studying it like a wholly alien cultural object. It looks like golf, a sport predominantly played by rich white men in real life and Mario characters in videogames. But… is this golf? I'm pretty sure every shot in this video is a hole-in-one, which is not too common. There are floating power-up (?) cubes in the sky. Every time the ball makes it to the cup, a confetti burst of golden coins fly out of it and rewards I don't understand tick up the screen.Happy Bonus. Mascot Bonus. Aztec Bonus?? There are definitely no Aztecs in this game, called PangYa, about magical anime girls playing golf.I'm totally in the dark, but I love it anyway. Watch the video above, and when the music pauses for a beat and then really kicks in at 40 seconds, I dare you to tell me this isn't the most exciting golf has been in its entire history.I had never heard of PangYa until a few weeks ago when I stumbled upon … [Read more...] about I’ve become obsessed with this totally ridiculous old anime golf MMO

A lie. That’s what this detailed 1990 golf simulation means to me. A great, stinking, 256-colour lie. My family was first subjected to the granular fairway of Links – The Challenge of Golf at some unknowable point in the 1990s, when games magically appeared next to our giant electrical greybox, usually following a visit from the large uncle. I and my endless squalor of brothers and sisters crowded around the golfscreen, and soon discovered the joy of purposefully whacking a ball into the trees. At this, a tinny voice would inspect the drive and announce: “Looks like you hit the tree, chump!” This was, you must understand, fucking hilarious. We did it again, and again. The ultimate goal of golf did not sway us to try other methods, unless that method involved hitting the ball into a lake. The menus, icons and buttons at the bottom of the screen meant nothing. There was only the unceasing quest to hit a ball into the nearest arboreal abyss. Looks like you hit the … [Read more...] about Have You Played… Links – The Challenge of Golf?
Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator publisher Excalibur Games has announced Resort Boss: Golf, a new tycoon game about – you guessed it – managing a golf resort. The game was previously known as Boss Golf, and is being created by industry veteran Gus Martin, who’s worked on projects like Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV. Resort Boss: Golf will task players with building a golf resort from a one-hole course to a five-star luxury resort, managing not only the courses themselves but ancillary facilities like hotels and restaurants. To commemorate the game’s announcement, Excalibur uploaded a trailer to YouTube showcasing the game’s idiosyncratic visuals and gameplay. It’s a pretty short trailer, but it shows off the level of depth and complexity with which players can approach their resort. A press release given by Excalibur says players will be able to utilize “expansive … [Read more...] about Manage Your Very Own Golf Resort In Resort Boss: Golf, Coming February 7th
