Even in the busiest of seasons, smaller games deserve some attention. In that spirit, welcome to Month of Coverage Club. Come back each day in November for a full-length impressions piece based on a hidden gem you’ve probably never heard of.Hakoniwa Explorer Plus was a title that had an interesting visual style to me. I decided to play this game purely on the promise of cute monster girls and some kind of vaguely RPG-ish combat. Beyond that, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I found plenty of surprises. This game is chock full of easter eggs, amusing writing, and – quite unfortunately – a number of questionable design decisions. The game begins with asking you a few questions, ostensibly to calibrate the game’s difficulty. You begin in the aptly-named hamlet of Firsttown. This little village has less than ten residents and a grand total of three buildings you can access. Your home is occupied by Sukumizu, a swimsuit-wearing girl who will teach you the … [Read more...] about Hakoniwa Explorer Plus Is Packed With Cute Monster Girls & Challenging Combat

I’ve always been a sucker for a good ninja-themed game, and The Messenger captures that Ninja Gaiden/Shinobi vibe well. Sharp pixel art, catchy chiptunes and an interesting twist define this Devolver-published platformer. While The Messenger looks like a perfectly solid Shovel Knight-esque platformer on the surface, the release date trailer below shows how players will be hopping between 8 and 16-bit versions of the game, and doing some clever things with this power. There’s not long to wait, either. The game will be launching in just under two weeks, on August 30th. There’s a lot to like in the trailer below, starting with some pleasingly complex-looking movement. A wingsuit for gliding down into pits, a zippy grappling hook, and a double-jump that can be recharged by hitting background objects with your sword, and – of course – wall jumping. The latter half of the trailer focuses on the big mechanical reveal – at some point, you gain the ability to … [Read more...] about Generation-hopping platformer The Messenger delivers the goods August 30th

Into every generation a Slayer is born… so said Giles in the very first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, 21 years ago. It was our first (technically second, if you count the movie) introduction to a girl who would change the world of TV and film. Joss Whedon’s creation would not only go on to become one of the most successful series of all time, but it would help define the generation of TV and movies that came after it. Without Buffy, we’d have fewer female action heroes, smaller movie universes, and a very different TV horror genre. You could kiss goodbye to your Veronica Mars, your MCUs (as you know it), and your Supernaturals, and while it’s easy to look back now and see how a pretty blonde girl fighting monsters would one day become such a huge pop culture icon, back in the early ‘90s no-one really noticed Buffy at all. Let’s talk about the thing none of us really want to acknowledge: the movie. In 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer made … [Read more...] about 21 years of the Slayer: How Buffy defined a generation of TV and movies
Feudalism sure made it hard to make a buck, back when. In Kingdom Come: Deliverance, you play Henry, a low-class punk that lost everything. Too bad for you, losing everything makes money a real concern in medieval Bohemia, and without any clear means to make it early on, times are going to be tough. That is, unless you’re willing to do a little dirty work. If you really can’t wait to stock up on Saviour Schnapps or want better armor, now, then follow our tips for making money as a nobody in Kingdom Come’s early hours. Pay Theresa's uncle ASAP Once you wake up in Rattay, you'll be in debt to the miller that paid your medical expenses and housed you during your recovery. You can pay the guy or do him a favor. Opt to do him the favor, even if it sounds a bit unsavory for a good lad like Henry. Dark times call for dark measures.
