Bursting into gaming in 2008 with Dominion, the deckbuilding genre has grown wildly in the past decade, eclipsing any expectations one might have had at the time. Deckbuilders take the nominally out-of-game mechanic of competitive card games, building your deck, and make it the focus of the game itself. Deckbuilding, though, has moved on a lot since 2008. We’re now in the era of the rising roguelike deck builder with wonderful games like Slay the Spire. They’re complex games with deep feature sets and a really specific set of skills to master. Modern deckbuilders are cool, complex games, but they don’t drill down into teaching you the fundamentals of the genre as a whole. 2017 may be over and done with, but the industry is not finished celebrating the year's games just yet. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has announced the nominees for the 21st D.I.C.E. Awards, which will take place in Las Vegas in February.Sony's Horizon: Zero Dawn led the way with 10 total nominations, including a nod for Game of the Year. The other Game of the Year nominees were Cuphead, PUBG, Super Mario Odyssey, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Other games that received multiple nominations this year included Breath of the Wild (6), Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (6), Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (6), Cuphead (5), Gorogoa (4), PUBG (4), Super Mario Odyssey (4).
