Uncharted might have once been PlayStation's golden goose, but the reaction to a recent report into The Last of Us remake revealed it's curious position in the wider landscape now. News that Day's Gone developer Sony Bend were in the pre-production phase of a new Uncharted game would have almost certainly dominated headlines years ago, but now it seems to be a curious side note, nothing more than a bit of color buried under bigger revelations. But it nevertheless offers up a tantalising glimpse of a potential future for fans. While Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has gone on to state that this project might not exist now , he also said in a recent appearance on the MinnMax show that it was “supposed to be an Uncharted spin-off, not Uncharted 5 or something like that. For sure there will be new Uncharted games in the future, who knows if that particular one will continue. But that doesn't even mean anything, it was just paper design.” So while it's unlikely that we'll be … [Read more...] about Uncharted might be making a comeback, but should it be with Naughty Dog?

Valheim Update 0.150.3 Notes: New Terrain System For Faster Loading
A new patch for the hit Norse multiplayer RPG Valheim is out now, and players should notice a smoother experience with faster load times. The patch adds a new terrain modification system, which the developers say took longer than expected. Because of that, the patch was delayed slightly, but now players can access it and enjoy the benefits. "The new terrain modification system is made to reduce the number of network instances and make loading faster and smoother. Technically it's a pretty big change but hopefully you should not notice that much of a difference except some minor behavior changes to the hoe and pickaxe and of course much smoother loading of areas with a lot of terrain modifications," developer Iron Gate said in the patch notes. All terrain modification methods, whether that be using a hoe, pickaxe, or cultivator, will now make use of the new system. "For existing areas where heavy terrain modifications have been made before this patch we have added a special … [Read more...] about Valheim Update 0.150.3 Notes: New Terrain System For Faster Loading
Unraveling the curious history of videogame mazes and labyrinths
The history of mazes and labyrinths is a maze itself. The first recorded labyrinth was commissioned by the Egyptian king Amenemhet III thousands of years ago: unlike the Minotaur labyrinth of Greek myth, this was built to be lived in, with banqueting halls, temples, and offices. Since then, mazes have been cut from turf, mosaicked on cathedral floors, stamped on coins, hacked into cornfields, formed by parking tourbuses, and fashioned from hedgerows as dallying spots for English aristocrats. Mazes and labyrinths generate a surprising range of emotions. Partly, this is because the former isn't quite the same as the latter. The associations of the noun 'maze' are largely negative, referring to bewilderment, deceit and worldly distraction. A labyrinth is a similarly confusing structure, but the word has acquired more positive senses over time—it can serve as a place for reverie and contemplation. Psychotherapists like Dr. Lauren Artress have even prescribed labyrinth-walking as a form … [Read more...] about Unraveling the curious history of videogame mazes and labyrinths

Sony is working on a new PlayStation cloud gaming experience
Sony is working on its own cloud gaming experience, and it's leaning on its now two-year-old partnership with Microsoft to help make it happen. Speaking with Japanese outlet Nikkei (translated by VGC ), Sony CEO Jim Ryan explained that, "We're still talking to [Microsoft] about exchanging ideas, and there's some very interesting stuff, so when the time is right, we'll announce our cloud strategy. We could conceivably use the cloud for our technical infrastructure, but the cloud gaming experience we're offering will be unique and only on PlayStation." PlayStation has dabbled with cloud gaming and other streaming services in the past, but it's yet to invest in the technology as heavily as Microsoft, which recently expanded its Xbox Cloud Gaming service with the first PC and iOS beta. PlayStation Vue was shuttered in 2020 , but PlayStation Now is still kicking, and it just added some new games including Borderlands 3 and Marvel's Avengers. Sony clearly has … [Read more...] about Sony is working on a new PlayStation cloud gaming experience
